Big Ten Football Morning Coffee: Matt McGloin Is Big Fan of Being Named Starter
Rise and shine, friends. Here's what's going down in the Big Ten today.
—Per Ron Musselman of StateCollege.com, Penn State QB Matt McGloin made the strongest criticism yet of the Joe Paterno era by calling Paterno's two-quarterback system of last season "a killer," and said that the team might have been more successful if McGloin had been the full-time starter. Now to be fair, McGloin didn't actually mention Paterno, but there's been a lot of reform and overhaul talk coming out of Happy Valley since Bill O'Brien showed up.
—According to ABC News and other sources, love letters from Jerry Sandusky to his alleged victims are going to be read by prosecutors during his trial. Which, yeah, if true, that's really gross. And we'll just reiterate this from yesterday: This trial is going to be extremely unsettling. Both sides are going to say disgusting things. Now is the time to leave; it's only going to get worse.
—More Penn State? More Penn State. The university has spent millions of dollars funding an independent investigation of its handling of the Jerry Sandusky/Joe Paterno scandal. A report of the investigation, overseen by former FBI director Louis Freeh, is expected to be released soon, and according to the Patriot-News, the Penn State board of directors will not be allowed to see it before its public release. That's not exactly good news for the board, which has been roundly criticized for its abrupt firing of Paterno in the wake of the scandal.
—Michigan is planning a special tribute for Air Force's arrival in Ann Arbor this season, according to Kyle Meinke of AnnArbor.com. Michigan AD Dave Brandon hasn't said what it is (you don't want spoilers anyway, do you?), but it fits in a larger theme of respect for the service academies and their football teams from both Brandon and head coach Brady Hoke. Brandon says Hoke would like to play the service academies as often as possible, which is a pretty cool dude attitude.
