Huge Names to Remember

Mark Appel, RHP, Stanford

There is serious uncertainty amongst MLB experts about who the Houston Astros are going to take with the No. 1 overall pick, but I’m putting my money on standout pitcher Mark Appel.

With plenty of big-game experience and an arsenal of weapons that includes a blazing fastball and a serious breaking ball, the Astros will be in good hands moving forward.

Houston will need a dominant starter as they head to the American League, and the hope is that Appel can be the team’s ace of the future. The Astros hope the future is sooner rather than later.

Kevin Gausman, RHP, LSU

While many scouts view Appel as the better prospect right now, LSU right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman may have the better long-term value to a team not looking to win right now. If a team can wait, Gausman could be a star with time to develop.

There is no doubt that Gausman had a dominant run in college, but he will need some time to adjust to the speed of the majors. With a few innings under his belt in the minors, the LSU alum could be a mid-season addition to any team’s rotation.

It is unlikely that the star goes No. 1, but he will be a top-five pick. I currently have Gausman slated to be drafted by the Minnesota Twins in my latest mock.

Byron Buxton, OF, Appling County HS (Ga.)

While most fans want to know about the next big pitching prospect, I always tend to lean towards the kids coming up with the powerful bats. This year’s best hitter is high-school outfielder Byron Buxton.

As good as Buxton’s skills in the outfield could be one day, it is his bat that has teams ready to snag him early in the first round; as early as No. 3 to the Seattle Mariners.

Buxton is still very raw, but the unparalleled power he has coming out of high school has him being favorably compared to a star like Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward. That’s high praise, but also a high bar to set for someone. We’ll have to see.
