Brazil vs. Mexico: Tricolor Will Pull off Impressive Upset

Alex HallJun 5, 2018

United States fans recently watched their national squad crumble to Brazil, but Mexico isn't the United States. The Tricolor may not be the most popular team in this friendly, but they will be the victorious one.

Due to the Brazilians owning five FIFA World Cup victories during their team's history, they enjoy the well-earned luxury of being favored in most fixtures they find themselves in. But being the favorite doesn't always ensure a victory.

Both clubs are coming into the friendly on impressive runs during their visit to America, with Brazil winning their first contest and Mexico having just one loss to their name over three fixtures.

Unlike in Brazil's last friendly, El Tri saw themselves tested by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Javier Hernandez scoring the game-winning goal in extra time to knock off the European squad.

Some may point to Mexico's trouble with the 27th-ranked FIFA club as a sign of weakness, but I'm a firm believer that a team gains more from a close victory or defeat than a blowout win.

Brazil has defeated their last two friendly opponents Denmark and the U.S. by a combined score of 7-2, showing they haven't been truly tested since they faced off against Bosnia and Herzegovina back in February.

The team with the most star power has to be Brazil, with Alexandre Pato, Hulk and Neymar, but Mexico with Chicharito and Giovani dos Santos should be feared just as much as their South American counterparts.

In just 34 international appearances, Hernandez has recorded 23 goals and will come into today's game at Cowboys Stadium with plenty of momentum and likely a friendly crowd.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 38 percent of Texas' population identifies themselves as Hispanic or Latino.

While undoubtedly some of those in attendance today likely have roots in Brazil, I'd think given Texas being so close to Mexico, it's safe to assume El Tri will have an almost-home-field advantage against their opponents.

Brazil hasn't lost since August of last year when Germany defeated them by a score of 3-2. While that is an impressive streak, with success comes confidence and with confidence comes overconfidence.

Mexico isn't the favorite to win this friendly, but they have plenty of signs pointing to what will be an impressive upset over the five-time FIFA World Cup champions
