NBA Trade Scenarios: Teams Most Likely to Move with the Draft Order Set

Stephen BabbMay 31, 2012

If you think the results of Wednesday's NBA draft lottery put an end to all the suspense surrounding June 28, you haven't seen anything just yet.

Draft-day trades in the NBA may not be quite as prominent as they are in the NFL, but they do still happen. Given the number of teams with multiple selections in this year's first round, we could be in store for more activity than usual.

Here are some of the teams to keep your eye on.

Boston Celtics (21st and 22nd picks)

If the Celtics don't make a move, they should still be fine. This rotation desperately needs some added depth, and that's exactly what Boston is likely to find at this point in the draft.

Nevertheless, this franchise also needs its core to get younger. Whether Ray Allen returns, for example, the Celtics still need someone to take over the lion's share of his minutes in the not-too-distant future. That might entice them to trade up for a more prominent prospect—assuming there's someone else willing to make a deal, of course.

Houston Rockets (14th and 16th picks)

The Rockets are in a win-win situation. If they keep these picks, they should be able to find two players who can step right into their rotation. That might not be true in every draft, but it is in this one.

Other teams know that as well, though, and that's exactly what makes Houston such an appealing trade partner. This franchise needs to get its hands on a star, and one or both of these draft picks could help them do so.

Portland Trail Blazers (6th and 11th picks)

When a club has two selections in the lottery, it also has flexibility. In an ideal world, Portland would hold on to both picks—especially in a draft this promising.

But, there's always a chance the Trail Blazers' preferred options will be taken before they're on the clock. In that event, the club might decide it makes sense to trade down or otherwise use at least one of their picks as bait to acquire a veteran.

This club is young, but it's also closer to being a playoff team than a team mired in a long-term rebuilding process. Unless it finds players in a position to help right away, it wouldn't be surprising to see some wheeling and dealing by the Trail Blazers.

Orlando Magic (19th pick)

Yes, there will be some decent players on the board when Orlando is up to pick, but there probably won't be the kind of players this team actually needs.

With the uncertainty surrounding its roster, Orlando should look to do everything in its power to move up. Even if that means moving up a few spots, it might be worth it, if it meant acquiring a new center like Tyler Zeller or Meyers Leonard.

Golden State Warriors (7th and 30th picks)

The Warriors won't have a hard time finding someone they can use with the seventh-overall selection, but the pick they acquired from the San Antonio Spurs is a bit superfluous. However, this is a deep draft, and there's no reason to believe there won't be decent talent at the end of the first round.

But the Warriors already have a slew of young players on the bench. If any of the top six teams are willing to move down a couple of spots in order to claim Golden State's 30th pick, the Warriors should jump at the opportunity—especially if there's a guy they really like at risk of being taken fifth or sixth.
