Liverpool FC: 10 of the Most Glorious Moments in Liverpool History
Liverpool. Just that one word, when spoken in football circles, is enough to evoke images of glorious moments. 18 top division titles, five continental titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups and 15 FA Charity/Community Shields will do that for you.
What follows is a list of 10 of those glorious moments. This list is by no means meant to be all-inclusive. Lord knows I don't have that kind of time.
It is also in no particular order. The moments included here are simply meant to evoke memories, not start or finish arguments. If there's a moment you feel that I've missed, or something that means a lot to you, feel free to mention it in the comments.
I won't be offended, I promise.
Champions League: Victory over Olympiakos Dec. 8, 2004
1 of 10You might have thought, given the picture I used to start this slideshow, that I would start with the unbelievable comeback in Istanbul.
That moment is on the list.
However, without this moment, Istanbul never happens. Because of goal differential, Liverpool had to win by a two-goal margin to advance to the knockout stage.
Rivaldo's first-half strike meant the Reds needed to score three times. As with many clutch moments over the last decade or so, Steven Gerrard came through when the club needed him most.
FA Cup: 2006 "Gerrard Final"
2 of 10I remember watching this game over at my friend Mark's house. It was a mix of Liverpool and West Ham supporters that got up early to eat breakfast and then watch the FA Cup final.
When the Reds went down early, the West Ham fans among us were feeling pretty good. Let's just say the day didn't end that way.
One of the things I will always remember is hearing the stadium announcer saying there would be four minutes of stoppage time as Gerrard equalizes the match from 35 yards out.
FA Cup: 2001 Final
3 of 10Five years and a day before the Gerrard Final, Liverpool took on Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium in the FA Cup final in the treble campaign of 2000-01.
Like in 2006, Liverpool fell behind. Like in 2006, a Reds' star scored two goals. Unlike in 2006, that star was Michael Owen.
Liverpool captain, at the time, Jamie Redknapp missed the game due to injury and went up to the podium with Robbie Fowler to accept the trophy.
How long ago was this match? Gerrard was still wearing No. 17, as Emile Heskey was still in the No. 8 shirt.
UEFA Cup: 2001 Final
4 of 10For this moment, we will stay in 2001. Treble seasons do seem to produce a lot of glorious moments.
This time, it was Alaves who would have to come from behind in dramatic fashion, battling back to tie from two two-goal deficits.
However, the number of yellow cards Alaves was getting simply became too much and Liverpool won it after Alaves went down to nine men in stoppage and gave up an own goal in extra time.
League Cup: 2012 Final
5 of 10Maybe instead of glorious moments, this should have been a list of dramatic moments. Then again, glorious moments are that much more memorable because of the drama that led to them.
In this year's League Cup final, once again, Liverpool fell behind. Once again, that didn't stop the men of Anfield from claiming yet another trophy for the case.
FA Cup: 1989 Final
6 of 10If only because of the pain suffered by the fans of Liverpool after the Hillsborough disaster the month prior, I would think this would mean that much more.
In this FA Cup final, it's another Merseyside derby. Everton fought back to equalize twice, but Liverpool were simply not to be denied.
European Cup: 1977 Semifinal V. St. Etienne
7 of 10Coming in to this match, St. Etienne held a 1-0 lead after a victory two weeks before.
As with the match v. Olympiakos, Liverpool needed to win by two goals to advance to the semifinal. We all know they did, because they won the European Cup for the first time in 1977.
On a side note, two things I noticed while watching the video: 1) the Liverpool keeper was not wearing gloves, his counterpart was; 2) maybe it's me, but the announcer on the video sounds a bit like Eric Idle from Monty Python.
League Championship: 1990
8 of 10Hard to believe it's been 22 years, but this was the last time Liverpool finished on top of the league table.
Two points clear of Aston Villa on the last day of the season, if Liverpool won and Aston Villa failed to win, Liverpool would win the league title.
One of the players for Liverpool on this squad, Steve Nicol, would become a pretty good manager in his own right.
European Cup: 1984 Final
9 of 10Somehow, it's not surprising that Liverpool were involved in the first European Cup final to go to penalties. A club with a knack for finding dramatic ways to win, Liverpool seems to almost enjoy the pressure.
Bruce Grobbelaar was probably not the first to use the "spaghetti legs," and he certainly wasn't the last.
UEFA Champions League: 2005 Final
10 of 10I said this moment was on the list, and I thought it would make a nice bookend.
This is one of the biggest comebacks I've ever seen in any sport. At halftime, Liverpool looked like their chances to win were between slim and none and slim was packing its bags. But, as we all know now, nothing seems to be impossible for this club.
Now, what are some of the glorious moments that you'd like everyone to know about?
