2012 NBA Lottery Results: Teams That Will Have the Toughest Decisions to Make

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

The 2012 NBA lottery is over, and the results are in. The Charlotte Bobcats didn't land the No. 1 overall pick, and as such they have a tough decision ahead of them.

They aren't the only team with difficult decisions looming on draft day, though. The talent pool is deep, but there are always going to be busts mixed in with the booms, and there are a few teams that will find themselves wondering if the player they're considering will end up disappointing them in the long run.

These teams have some tough decisions ahead of them, as the future of their franchises depends on whether or not they choose correctly when the pressure is on come June 28.

Charlotte Bobcats with the No. 2 overall pick

Bobcats general manager Rich Cho had his best poker face going when the announcement was made that his team didn't land the coveted No. 1 pick of this year's draft. I can only guess that inside he must have been seething, though.

He talked about the team's strategy with the AP after the lottery was complete, saying, "We will still take the best player available and when you win seven games you have a lot of holes. From a competitive standpoint and for anyone who has played sports or been competitive, you want to win and be No. 1. We know we're still going to get a good player."

I sure hope so, for his sake. He now has to decide which second-tier player after Anthony Davis will be the one to carry the banner for the Bobcats next season. Players he could consider would be Thomas Robinson out of Kansas, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist out of Kentucky or Bradley Beal out of Florida.

That's a tough decision to make, especially considering the team was certainly hoping to land Davis to become the face of its franchise.

Cleveland Cavaliers with the No. 4 overall pick

The Cavaliers have only one solid player they know they can count on to lead the team going forward. After Kyrie Irving, the rest of their roster is pretty fluid.

They need to make sure their No. 4 overall pick is a good one because a swing-and-miss could set the franchise back a couple more years—just ask the Sacramento Kings.

Their decision will be based partly on what the three teams in front of them end up doing, but there will still be plenty of talented players to choose from. I'm partial to shooting guard Bradley Beal to complement Irving in the backcourt, but the team has strong needs in its frontcourt, as well.

They could take a gamble on center Andre Drummond out of Connecticut, though he is a one-sided player at this point in his career. He can block shots better than anyone in this year's draft class besides Davis, but his offensive repertoire leaves much to be desired.

The Cavaliers need to weigh their decision carefully.

Sacramento Kings with the No. 5 Overall Pick

Perhaps no NBA team has as much pressure to make a good pick than the Kings, who recently blew their opportunity to build a new arena in Sacramento.

The fanbase is mutinous at this point after years of mediocre play and questionable personnel decisions, and it's imperative Geoff Petrie lands a starting-caliber player who can instantly impact the team in a positive way.

Making matters worse is that last year's first-round pick, Jimmer Fredette is widely viewed as a pure bust after a subpar rookie campaign that exposed his inability to create his own shot and proved he isn't to be trusted on the defensive end of the court.

Drummond may still be available, and his offensive deficiencies would be acceptable for the Kings, as DeMarcus Ware possesses enough offensive firepower down low to carry the load.

The Kings will be sorting through the scraps left over from the top four teams that pick ahead of them, and their decision will need to be made with care.
