NBA Draft 2012: Why the Charlotte Bobcats Received a Blessing with the 2nd Pick
On Wednesday night, the ping-pong balls didn't bounce in favor for another team hoping to win 2012 NBA Draft Lottery and earn the first pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.
The Charlotte Bobcats were supposed to have the best chance to win the lottery, and after winning just seven games in the 2011-12 season, why shouldn't they?
Basketball reasons. That's why.
I'm not talking about the basketball reasons that most fans are referencing when it comes to the lottery and anything else David Stern has done over the past 12 months. I'm talking about the fact that it wouldn't make sense for the Bobcats to draft Anthony Davis with the first pick in the draft.
If the Bobcats had won the lottery, there would be immense pressure on Michael Jordan and company to select Davis. However, Davis doesn't fit what the Bobcats need right now because they already have a version of Davis in Bismack Biyombo.
It may sound crazy, but Davis and Bioyombo are essentially the same player. Even though Davis put up ridiculous stats (14.3 points per game and ten rebounds per game) in his only season at Kentucky, he is still a raw offensive talent when it comes to NBA standards.
This is shown in Davis' scouting report on NBAdraft.net.
"Offensive canvas is raw, with obvious enormous room for improvement ... Doesn’t yet have a feel for his jump shot, often rushing the attempt and shooting a flat shot ...It’s hard to fault him for being shot block happy, but the lack of discipline is not to his benefit
"
Now compare that with the website's scouting report for Biyombo prior to the 2011 NBA Draft.
"Offensive game is a long ways from being NBA ready ... He still needs to develop his footwork and overall awareness ...Too often loses rebounds by jumping in an uncontrolled fashion for blocked shots instead of keeping his inside position to box out his opponent ...
"
While it's not exactly the same, you can see that there's no way the Bobcats could have had Davis and Biyombo on the floor at the same time. Their offensive deficiencies would have proved fatal for one of the worst offensive teams in the NBA last season.
While Bobcat fans have to be disappointed not landing the superstar of the 2012 draft class, they have to understand that not all is lost. The 2012 draft is loaded with talent, and the Bobcats could decide to go with Bradley Beal, Jeremy Lamb, or Harrison Barnes to help score some points.
The Bobcats will do just fine without Anthony Davis. Now, Bobcat fans have to hope that Michael Jordan does better with this pick than he has with his other decisions since acquiring the team.
