Oregon Football: Updating the Ducks Recruiting Investigation
While everyone sits back and enjoys the feeling of being three-time conference champion and winning their first Rose Bowl in a long time, there is still something that is creeping around in the shadows; the NCAA investigation.
Last offseason, the Ducks were swarmed with questions as reports came out that Oregon had contracted Will Lyles and had leveraged his relationships with recruits to get them to come to Oregon. As the 2011 season drew closer and closer, this story got pushed on the back burner and allowed the Ducks to focus on another conference crown.
The offseason is more than halfway over and while Duck fans were able to enjoy the recruiting period, the spring game, the pending quarterback battle, it is still there, lurking and waiting.
Over the past several months, no news has been released about the investigation into Oregon's recruiting practices.
While the results of the NCAA investigation could be announced at anytime, what we know right now is that it appeared that the investigation was heading towards a summery disposition. Basically what the Ducks are hoping for is that by admitting to three smaller recruiting violations, they will satisfy the NCAA and can be done with this process.
The most recent update came in the middle of May when KATU News reviewed some recent emails between head coach Chip Kelly and athletic director Rob Mullens. Basically it boiled down to two emails in which the two exchanged links to articles on the Oregon investigation and then also an ESPN article on how sanctions affected USC.
This is one of those rare times that no news is not necessarily good news, but for now, fans can continue to look forward to the upcoming season but the fanbase will not be able to fully relax until this matter is put to bed.
