Group A, Poland over Greece
Poland for one, is a big underdog in the group but that's what makes them dangerous. Greece will play its typical defense to shutdown any scoring chances, so Poland just has to push the pace.
If anything's trusting, its man-to-man defense will be key as attacking harder at Greece will leave Poland more vulnerable on the back end. The production of striker Robert Lewandowski must continue for Poland to have any shot.
The more favorable positions his teammates can supply, the increased odds we'll see from Lewandowski at scoring against a tough Greece defense.
Group C, Ireland over Croatia
Ireland enters the contest with confidence.
The Irish have been playing decently well and Croatia has proven to be vulnerable at times; such as their qualifying group.
Here, expect Ireland to try and isolate Mario Mandzukic because he's Croatia's best striker. Luka Modric has excellent passing skills but taking Madukic out of the picture will force Modric among others to step up and score.
That's when Ireland can take over with Robbie Keane and James McClean. Both have proven the ability to score and McClean can also contribute to defense in knocking the wind out of Croatia.
Group A, Czech Republic over Russia
Russia is the clear-cut favorite to take the group, so this match is the Czech Republic's to win. One minor factor in the Czech's favor is this not being the most difficult of groups either.
Therefore, they may not get Russia's A-game and could steal the group.
As for the game, the Czech Republic must win one-on-one matchups. Russia has multiple players who can score and/or get in position to score, so remaining physical early and often can create some frustration.
Michael Kadlec is the key for the Czechs as he's arguably their most complete player. On the offense, Kadlec can pass effectively and when needed, be reliable at taking shots to score. Defensively, he's a technically sound performer and thrives well in clutch situations.
