NBA Draft 2012: Teams That Would Be Better off Trading No. 1 Overall Pick

Mike MoraitisJun 7, 2018

Winning the NBA Draft lottery is normally a lucky event for any NBA franchise, but in some cases teams are simply better off trading the No. 1 overall pick, should they win it.

There are organizations out there looking to win right now which don't want to wait for developing players or are already set at the positions played by the most talented prospects.

Perhaps, even, a trade presents itself as a result of winning the top pick that would put a certain team over the top.

Here are some teams that would be better off trading the No. 1 overall pick, should they be fortunate enough to land it.

Brooklyn Nets

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Nets will have to do more than just win the No. 1 overall pick in order to keep their star point guard, Deron Williams.

They will need to add Dwight Howard to their roster, and the No. 1 overall pick is their best way to do that.

D12 wants out of Orlando, according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, and Brooklyn would be the best fit for the big man.

If the Magic must lose their franchise player, they will look to replace him with an equally promising player, and if the Nets have access to such a player, they would easily be the favorites to land the best center in the NBA.

The Magic get their franchise big man, and the Nets get their second star, to keep D-Will in Brooklyn.

The trade would work out perfectly for both sides.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors dealt their best scorer—Monta Ellis—last season for an inside presence in Andrew Bogut.

However, likely No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis is a center, and since the Warriors are already set at that position, they won't be needing his services.

Instead, Golden State should look to make a deal that would replace the production they lost when Ellis was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.

A move like that might not put Warriors ownership in any more favor with fans than they were after trading Ellis, but Golden State could potentially land a few solid scorers or one great one by trading the No. 1 overall pick.

Cleveland Cavaliers

With Tristan Thompson being the future for the Cavs at center, the team may not need to draft Davis with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Instead, Cleveland could look to deal the pick in order to bring in some more depth to their starting five and bench.

Kyrie Irving is an All-Star-caliber player who is ready to compete now. Davis could slow that progression, since he needs time to develop, leaving Irving to struggle to improve without any scoring talent around him.

It's always the sexier move to keep the top pick, but the Cavs would be better served adding depth for now rather than potential talent for down the road.
