NBA Lottery 2012: How Anthony Davis Affects NBA Landscape as No. 1 Pick

Mike MoraitisJun 1, 2018

The NBA draft lottery will take place tonight and for one lucky team, it will mean they have a chance to grab Anthony Davis as the No. 1 overall pick. The team is still in question, the player is not.

Adding Davis to any of the potential teams who have a shot at the top pick would instantly change the fortunes of not only that team, but the NBA as well.

Here's how the NBA landscape will change when Davis is picked No. 1 overall in the NBA draft.

Charlotte Bobcats

Michael Jordan's team has been an utter failure at everything they've done since their inception into the league. As the NBA draft approaches, Charlotte will have yet another chance to change their ways and get on the road to winning.

Davis' addition to the Bobcats would instantly give them a franchise big man to build their team around as well as some much needed credibility. Combined with Kemba Walker, Charlotte will have two young, potential stars moving forward and that is sometimes the most important part of a championship recipe.

The NBA would love nothing more than to see it's struggling, small market franchise come out of the depths of ineptitude on the back of two young players who will certainly be the future of this league if they pan out.

If the Bobcats can complete that pairing, they should have no problem surpassing the pathetic seven-win season they had in 2011-12.

Also, they have a real chance to compete in the Southeast division with the Atlanta Hawks stuck in neutral and possibly set to lose their best player, Josh Smith, to free-agency. Also, if the Magic lose Dwight Howard and start the rebuilding process, Charlotte could realistically finish second in their division.

How's that for a changed landscape in the NBA?

Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards are the stiffest competition odds-wise to the Bobcats' hopes for the No. 1 pick.

Pairing Davis with John Wall would finally give the young point guard a legitimate player to compete with and a presence down low to dump the ball to. Washington would be set for years to come with their two young stars in the making and will certainly have enough to convince Wall to stay in the future.

If the Wizards can get the top spot in the draft, they would have a chance to make a drastic move up in the standings.

As I previously mentioned, the Hawks and Magic could be on their way down in the Southeast division with all the potential changes they face. That will open the door for a surging Wizards team on the rise to make a bold statement in the 2012-13 season.

It's safe to say the Wizards could improve on their 20-win season from 2011-12, and in a weaker Eastern Conference, they could actually have a chance to make the playoffs.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets have a little more than a seven percent chance of getting the top overall pick in the NBA draft, but no team in the entire league would benefit more from such an opportunity.

Moving to Brooklyn next season, the Nets desperately need a big name to enter their ranks to not only keep their all-world point guard, Deron Williams, but to help create a buzz for the move into the Barclay's Center.

Picking Davis would help the Nets in one of two ways:

The No. 1 overall pick would guarantee landing the most coveted player in the draft, but it's doubtful the Nets would be looking to groom a young player that will still be a few years away when they undoubtedly want to win now.

Brooklyn can turn around and trade the No. 1 overall pick to the Magic, a team that could be looking to rebuild if Dwight Howard doesn't return next season. The Nets would get their big man to help them win a title right away and the Magic would get their franchise replacement for D12.

Or the Nets could simply keep Davis if a trade opportunity doesn't present itself and the potential No. 1 overall pick would be the face of the franchise for years to come, whether they have D-Will or not.
