Anthony Davis: Ideal Landing Spots for Draft's Top Player
With the NBA draft lottery tonight, one thing is certain: Whichever team ends up with the top overall pick is going to select Kentucky star Anthony Davis.
You can bet the house on it.
But which teams (with a realistic chance of actually winning the lottery—sorry Phoenix Suns or Houston Rockets' fans) would be the best fit for Davis? What squads might he hope to land with?
Let's take a look.
Sacramento Kings: 7.60% Chance of Winning Lottery
The Kings already have a young squad with potential, highlighted by center DeMarcus Cousins (18.1 PPG, 11.0 RPG) and guards Tyreke Evans (16.5 PPG, 4.5 APG) and Marcus Thornton (18.7 PPG).
This team has players that can score the rock. But they aren't particularly good defensively, which is where Davis would be the perfect addition. Paired with Cousins on the block, Davis would give this team one of the best frontlines in the NBA almost immediately.
And with other scoring options already on board, Davis could slowly develop his own offensive game without the pressure of needing to be the top option. His addition would make the Kings a sexy sleeper pick to make the playoffs next season.
Cleveland Cavaliers: 13.80% Chance of Winning Lottery
Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson and Anthony Davis—how's that for rebuilding your team through two drafts?
Cleveland would be the perfect fit for Davis, in that it already has a young star at the point in Irving who can carry the scoring load. Plus, rotating Davis, Thompson and Anderson Varejao on the block would give the Cavs an excellent combination in the post.
And how many shots would the pair of Thompson and Davis swat away? Trying to drive the lane would be offensive suicide when facing the Cavs.
Add Davis, and the Cavs would be the second-coming of the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that built itself into a contender by nailing its lottery picks. That whole LeBron James debacle would seem a whole lot further away if Davis were headed to town, that's for sure.
Washington Wizards: 19.90% Chance of Winning Lottery
The combination of Davis on the inside and John Wall on the outside would be nasty, and Davis' defensive abilities and his unselfishness as a teammate would be just what the doctor ordered in Washington.
With Nene manning the center position, Davis would slot in at the power forward position in Washington. And with Wall and Jordan Crawford as this team's leading scorers, he would also be a central aspect of this team's offensive attack.
I don't think this is as appealing a situation for Davis as Cleveland—imagining he and Irving running roughshod on the NBA for the next decade is too much fun to think about—but he would have a very defined role and huge impact in Washington next season.
