2012 NBA Draft Order: Current Odds for Every NBA Lottery Team

Garrett JochnauMay 27, 2012

The NBA Lottery is just days away, a day that can change the course of NBA history forever. Some teams will receive picks allowing them to select a star who will carry their team in future years, while other teams will receive selections that won't allow them to take their player of choice.

Based on their regular season record, each non-playoff team has a shot to acquire the first pick in the draft. Here are the current odds for each lottery team. All odds are out of 1,000.

1. Charlotte Bobcats (Lottery Chances: 250)

The Bobcats' 2012 dismal win percentage of .106 found its way into the record books—and not for a good reason. Their 7-59 record allowed them to secure themselves the greatest chance of getting the top pick, something that they need in the utmost degree.

With Anthony Davis as their primary target, the Bobcats will hope that a 25 percent chance will be enough to secure the No. 1 spot.

2. Washington Wizards (Lottery Chances: 199)

Washington finished with a 20-46 record, good for the league's second-worst record. The Wizards are no stranger to the No. 1 spot, as they selected John Wall as the first overall pick.

Young guard Jordan Crawford is finding his niche in the offense, so the Wizards will look for a forward or a center to complement the young guard core.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers (Lottery Chances: 138)

Cleveland obtained the first pick in the draft last year, which they used on Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving. They also had the fourth overall pick and used it to add big man Tristan Thompson to the roster.

A high pick this year will likely be used to grab a swingman, a move that would give them a good core moving forward.

4. New Orleans Hornets (Lottery Chances: 137)

After trading All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers prior to the season's start, the Hornets immediately jumped from a playoff contender to one of the league's worst teams. Despite finishing with the same record as the Cavaliers, they lost the tie break, giving them a slightly worse chance at the top pick.

With 137 chances, the team looks to find a player to steer the organization back on track. With the possibility of losing shooting guard Eric Gordon to free agency, the team may target Bradley Beal as a replacement. If he stays, adding a big man might be their top priority.

5. Sacramento Kings (Lottery Chances: 76)

The Kings are a team with a solid core, which may allow them to become contenders in the future. Led by DeMarcus Cousins and Mr. Not So Irrelevant, Isaiah Thomas, they have a strong core, and with one more addition, they might find themselves on the other end of this list by next year.

They won the tie break with the Nets, earning them the fifth-greatest chances in this year's lottery.

6. Portland Trail Blazers/Brooklyn Nets (Lottery Chances: 75)

Few teams need a top three pick as badly as the Brooklyn Nets. With Deron Williams' contract expiring, the team needs all of the luck that they can get to bring him to Brooklyn.

Because of this, the news on deadline day, stating that the team had traded their pick for Gerald Wallace, shocked the world. The pick will be sent to Portland unless their pick falls in the top three.

For Portland, they need the pick almost as badly as the Nets. After losing All-Star forward Brandon Roy to injury, the team's entire future seemed to crumble. At the deadline, the Blazers parted with Marcus Camby, Jonny Flynn and Gerald Wallace, turning their entire roster upside down.

With LaMarcus Aldridge in dire need of a sidekick, the team needs to make sure the pick does not end up in the top three. Then, they can only hope for more success than in the past.

7. Golden State Warriors/Utah Jazz (Lottery Chances: 36)

The Warriors won the tie break with Toronto, giving them a 72 percent chance of keeping their pick. If the pick does indeed fall below No. 7, then it will be conveyed over to Utah. However, the team is reportedly attempting to make sure that they receive the pick, via a trade with Utah.

With Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry, their backcourt is set, but the team could use some help in other areas.

If Utah were to obtain the pick, they would likely use it on a swingman, a position which they lacked during the entirety of this season.

8. Toronto Raptors (Lottery Chances: 35)

Ever since Chris Bosh left Toronto for Miami, the Raptors have been one of the worst teams in the league. With last year's first-round selection, Jonas Valanciunas, on his way to the NBA, a clearer future seems hopeful.

The Raptors have the eighth-best odds in the draft, and with these odds, they will look towards a guard to help Valanciunas and Andrea Bargnani.

9. Detroit Pistons (Lottery Chances: 17)

Detroit is another team that is one missing link way from a playoff spot. Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight give the team a solid core to build around, and this years' deep draft is perfect to add to their pool of talent.

A swingman is ideal to give the team a solid three-pronged attack, and with the ninth-best chances in this season's lottery, the team will look towards that type of player.

10. New Orleans Hornets (Lottery Chances: 11)

The Hornets' second pick in this years' draft currently has the 10th-best odds in the lottery. This pick will likely be used to grab a player to complement that selection with their previous pick.

As one of two teams with two lottery picks, the Hornets will try to build a core that will improve the team's murky future.

11. Portland Trail Blazers (Lottery Chances: 8)

Portland is the other team with two lottery picks in this year's draft. With the first one not secured, this one can be counted on to give them a player. While the odds are against landing a top talent with this pick, solid players are still available, and one can be used to complement their earlier selection, assuming it falls below the top three.

12. Milwaukee Bucks (Lottery Chances: 7)

After failing to make the playoffs, the Milwaukee Bucks secured themselves a spot in this year's lottery. With Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings occupying the guard positions, the team will likely use this selection to find a partner for Ersan Ilyasova in the frontcourt.

13. Phoenix Suns (Lottery Chances: 6)

Phoenix may lose Steve Nash to free agency, leaving the guard spot vacant for a rookie to fill. Even if Nash signs on for a few more years, grabbing a guard with this late lottery pick would be a smart idea, as Nash's seasons are limited.

14. Houston Rockets (Lottery Chances: 5)

Houston barely missed out on the playoffs this season, allowing them to hold onto their first-round pick that was lottery-protected. With Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry leading the attack, the team is just one component away from re-emerging as a playoff-worthy team.

While it is unlikely that they will receive a spot better than last, there is still talent available, and a role player is needed to return Houston to success.
