Liverpool FC: 8 Popular Managers Reds Should Not Consider Hiring

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 7, 2018

Liverpool look to have concluded their search for their newest manager, following reports that Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers has agreed a three-year deal with the Merseyside club.

However, there are many popular managers that we can all be thankful the Reds have not signed—many that we can be glad were never thought to have even been in the running.

Here are eight managers that we are all happy the club has passed over.

Steve Bruce

1 of 8

Steve Bruce has had his fine moments at the helm of several clubs. His decent work with Wigan Athletic led to a move to Sunderland in 2009, and although he had some great successes, his complete squad overhaul at the start of the 2011-12 season left his side devoid of direction and eventually lost him his job.

Liverpool need a manager that for one is not a Manchester United legend, and one that can implement tactics in the right manner. The Reds also need to hire a manager that has had more success than the former Black Cat.

Mick McCarthy

2 of 8

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy is a great manager for smaller clubs. He is an expert at keeping you from being relegated, but not one to ever lead a club up the table.

In the whole of his career, his record is hampered severely by the fact that he has lost about as many games as he has won in 20 years in management.

Rafael Benitez

3 of 8

Rafael Benitez was a good Liverpool manager. However, he truly peaked before his time by winning the Champions League in his first season. Other than to win the league, there was little he could do to impress the fans like that again.

The Spaniard would not be an ideal candidate for the new Liverpool formula. His demands for transfer funds and his desire to find his own players would not fit under a sporting director that the new owners want to have in place.

Ian Holloway

4 of 8

There is no secret that Ian Holloway's teams play great attacking football. However, the majority of the time the defense is neglected.

On top of that, Holloway, while very entertaining for the most part, has a sometimes crude way of dealing with the press. That would likely not go over well with the Liverpool fans.

Sven-Goran Eriksson

5 of 8

Sven-Goran Eriksson has a truly impressive managerial pedigree, no matter who you ask, with a great career winning percentage of 51 percent.

The problem with Eriksson is that he is rather fickle. His last four jobs, between Manchester City, Mexico, Cote d'Ivoire and Leicester City, as well as his bizarre stint at Notts County, should be enough to scare many off.

Roberto Martinez

6 of 8

Roberto Martinez falls along the same lines as many before him. His experience is more rooted in keeping a team up than in pushing the club up the table.

Martinez also has the same managerial attitude as Rafael Benitez in that he wants almost complete control of all football operations on top of being the manager. At times, that can put too much on a manager's plate and make his club leadership suffer.

Chris Hughton

7 of 8

Chris Hughton did a great job with Newcastle, but was not going to ever be the man to lead them to glory beyond the Championship. The majority of his managerial career has seen him as an interim boss, which has given him rather limited experience for a man already 53 years old.

His current job with Birmingham City is a much better fit, as he is learning what it is like to lead a club. Liverpool need a manager that has been in the hotseat once or twice before and won't get rattled.

Gus Poyet

8 of 8

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet looks to be a talented up and coming manager. However, what sets him back is that he has only had one job to be judged on.

Although he won great praise for getting the club promoted to the Championship in 2010-11, his first season in the next level proved he is still learning his formula for success.
