UFC 146 Results: JDS, Cain Velasquez Make Their Cases for a Rematch
UFC 146 made for an exciting night with its two main events. Even though last Saturday featured many heavyweights, the focus was on two heavyweights who headlined the first UFC on FOX broadcast: Current champion Junior Dos Santos and the former champion Cain Velasquez.
Dos Santos was set to defend his title against Frank Mir. Velasquez would take on Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, who was making his UFC debut. It seems both men wanted to prove a point Saturday night, and they did.
Cain Velasquez Looks Poised to Get His Title Back
1 of 4Velasquez looked like a man on a mission, finishing Silva early with a bloody, first-round TKO. Velasquez took down Silva after he caught a Silva kick. From there, Velasquez cut Silva deeply on his nose and continued to pound until the referee looked at the wound. After the referee allowed the fight to continue, Velasquez continued to pound on his head ferociously until the fight was stopped at 3:36, in the first round.
Junior Dos Santos Defeats Frank Mir
2 of 4In the main event, Dos Santos successfully defended his heavyweight title against former champion Frank Mir. Dos Santos kept the fight standing and defused Mir’s jiu-jitsu game. He was relentless, as Mir could not muster any offense. Mir took a body shot from Dos Santos that backed him up into the cage. Dos Santos threw a flurry of punches, but Mir survived the round. Mir didn't last, as Dos Santos caught him with a right hand and ended the fight at 3:04 of the second round.
Roy Nelson Victorious Once Again
3 of 4Other heavyweights got back to their winning ways. Roy Nelson defeated Dave Herman in 51 seconds. Nelson landed a big overhand right, and that was all it took. Nelson landed one punch on the ground before the fight ended.
In a battle of young heavyweights, Stipe Miocic defeated Shane Del Rosario with ground-and-pound in the second round. Miocic struggled in the first round, but controlled the second and took down Del Rosario.
Stefan Struve opened the night with a quick submission over Lavar Johnson. Struve put Johnson in an armbar and made Johnson tap out after 1:05 in the fight.
Dos Santos/Velasquez II?
4 of 4Dos Santos and Velasquez seem poised for a rematch. Both fighters had impressive victories over established competitors. Velasquez sent a message with his victory, stating he’s ready to get his title back. Dos Santos sent a message as well with his performance, stating he will hold his UFC heavyweight title for a long time. These performances should solidify their cases for a rematch.
Both fighters are proven headliners for the UFC. Their first fight in November lasted 64 seconds as Dos Santos knocked out Velasquez. Reports estimate that over eight million viewers tuned in to see Dos Santos capture the UFC Heavyweight Title. With last night’s performances, it seems inevitable for these two heavyweights to battle again. Fans should be demanding this rematch and thanks to the dominating victories of both fighters, it’s only a matter of time before fans see Dos Santos/Velasquez II.
