Dos Santos vs Mir: Junior's Rout Proves Mir Didn't Deserve Title Shot

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Junior Dos Santos destroyed Frank Mir at UFC 146, and I'm not surprised. Mir had no business receiving a title shot, but it was the UFC's attempt at throwing a name into the main event to appease fans.

Dos Santos' opponent was supposed to be Alistair Overeem, but by now, all of us know that the Reem had some peculiar test results that cause him to be suspended, and thus out of this event. When Mir's name was announced as the replacement, I groaned because I knew this would happen.

Mir has had a legendary career, but is clearly no match for Dos Santos. That point was savagely driven home last night with Junior's second-round TKO of Mir.

In the co-main event, the man Mir was supposed to face, Cain Velasquez, beat the dickens out of Antonio "Big Foot" Silva in the first round. In my opinion, I would have rather seen a rematch of Velasquez and Dos Santos than him taking on Mir.

I know Dos Santos just flattened Velasquez to win the title, but I could buy a rematch for the ex-champion, even if the loss was decisive. I think Velasquez is capable of giving Dos Santos a better fight, and his demolition of Silva did nothing to discount that thought.

Mir had won three bouts in a row, but I contend the quality of opponents were nothing to write home about (Antonio Nogueira, Roy Nelson and an old Mirko Filipovic). I understand the UFC wanting to keep things fresh, but the night was already damaged by Overeem's dirty test results.

Propping Mir up as a legitimate contender made the main event a joke. Luckily for the UFC, there were some other great fights on the card, and it took pressure off the boring main event.

Now the question is, will Dos Santos' next opponent be recent Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier or Velasquez. It seems Velasquez has the edge, according to Dana White who was quoted by ESPN as follows:

"

"Cain went undefeated for a long time, lost to Junior," White said. "[Dos Santos] defends the title and [Velasquez] wins, so we like that fight.

"Cain deserves the next fight."

"

Either opponent would be formidable and acceptable; let's just hope we don't have a repeat of the Overeem fiasco.

There is no telling who White would have to turn to as a replacement.

Dan Severn, anyone?
