WWE's 10 Best Documentaries and Match Compilations on Netflix Watch Instantly

Ryan DilbertMay 29, 2012

Ladder matches, WWE icons and historical reflections highlight the WWE goodies available on Netflix.

A few years ago, if you wanted to get your wrestling fix from Netflix's instant stream, you had to settle for the B-movie Wrestlemaniac or the slow-moving documentary The Backyard.

Now you can watch documentaries that trace a wrestler's roots.

Collections of matches will likely have you dug firmly into your couch.

From the Attitude Era to the '80s boom, the days of the territories and the Undertaker's legendary career, let nostalgia wash over you or deepen your WWE knowledge.

Honorable Mention: Best of King of the Ring

1 of 11

Keep your remote handy, as you'll likely be fast-forwarding through all the filler matches.  Jeff Hardy vs. X-Pac is not on many must-see lists.

But for every questionable inclusion, WWE gets one resoundingly right.

You can't have a King of the Ring compilation without Bret Hart vs. Bam Bigelow.  That stunning match elevated the pay-per-view to a new level.

Shawn Michaels vs. British Bulldog is another excellent selection.

The match between Jake Roberts and Steve Austin is underwhelming, but the monumental promo that followed is exciting to re-watch.

WWE also included two obvious King of the Ring classics in Kurt Angle and Shane McMahon's Street Fight as well as the Hell in a Cell where Jim Ross thought Mankind was dead.

While not as impressive as the WWE Championship or Ladder Match collections, there is still plenty to see and get pumped about.

Stone Cold Steve Austin

2 of 11

Ninety-nine percent of wrestling fans already know the story of Steve Austin, former WCW mid-carder, now WWE icon.

Still, it's a thrill to relive it.

Having Austin host it himself is a brilliant move, as it uses his unending charisma to pull us in.

The documentary provides an unfiltered look into his frustrations with WCW, dealing with his neck issues, why he left the WWE and the creation and development of his Stone Cold persona.

Re-watching all of his goofy skits with Vince McMahon and beer-spraying moments is a fun ride.

The DVD version has three discs worth of matches but alas, the Netflix only offers the documentary section.

The Spectacular History of the AWA

3 of 11

Like with any WWE-produced history of a once-rival  promotion, some things are omitted and some are glossed over.

Still, this documentary provides a healthy amount of history.

Most of the story is centered around AWA star and promoter, Verne Gagne.

Gagne's career and contributions are covered reasonably well.  Wrestling history buffs will find plenty to like here.

Interviews and clips of AWA wrestlers Baron von Raschke, Jessie Ventura and Nick Bockwinkel offer insight into the past.  It's also interesting to see a much younger Hulk Hogan in action.

Unfortunately, the Netflix instant version doesn't offer any matches.

History of the WWE Championship

4 of 11

Jim Ross hosts a collection of some of the greatest WWE title matches ever.

You've likely already seen most of these, but these classics are worth revisiting.

Other than being a bit Hulk Hogan heavy, WWE made some excellent choices in picking the representatives of the WWE title.

The first section features Iron Sheik, Pedro Morales, and Bruno Sammartino.

The Ultimate Warrior and Hogan battle at WrestleMania VI, and the Hart vs. Hart cage match at SummerSlam '94 follow.

Watching Rock and Austin at WrestleMania 17, Triple H and Cactus Jack's Street Fight at Royal Rumble 2000 and Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle's masterpiece at Royal Rumble 2003 is an invigorating experience regardless of how many times you’ve seen them.

The Big Show: A Giant’s World

5 of 11

The story of Paul Wight's evolution into The Big Show is one of the more intriguing WWE single-wrestler documentaries available.

This benefits from the interesting nature of The Big Show's life and how overwhelmingly charming he can be.

I'd even recommend non-wrestling fans to watch the big man through the struggles of his early life, the death of his father and his up-and-down career.

Big Show is a funny and likable guy who you want to hang out with.  Watching interviews with him on his bus almost gives you the feel that you're riding along with him.

Bobby “the Brain” Heenan

6 of 11

A stunning tribute to the best manager of all-time is something every wrestling fan should see.

This documentary showcases his finely sharpened humor and his impact on WWE and wrestling in general.

It bursts with clips of his skits with Gorilla Monsoon, his biting commentary and his short-lived talk show.

The origins of the Weasel suit and the genesis of his career are explored as well.

Seeing cancer sap his gusto, watching him deteriorate is painful.  The film celebrates and showcases one of the greatest minds and mouths in wrestling history.

Edge: A Decade of Decadence

7 of 11

Set aside a few hours—Edge's career retrospective boasts a ton of great wrestling.

The impressive collection of matches, of course, features the famous WrestleMania 2000 TLC match.

It's hard not to ooh and ah at the gutsy spots all of those guys suffered through.

You'll see superb matches against Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero.

A flaming table snapping in half serves as the climax to his unforgettable match at WrestleMania 22 with Mick Foley.

Both his TLC and Hell in a Cell battles against the Undertaker are on here, as is the Money in the Bank match he won.

Spears, hair pulling and broken ladders await you.

Tombstone: The History of the Undertaker

8 of 11

Unfortunately, this match collection was made before the Undertaker composed his masterful matches with Shawn Michaels at consecutive WrestleManias.

There is still plenty here to satisfy anyone seeking Undertaker's best battles.

His matches with Hulk Hogan, The Rock and Triple H are featured.

Both of his clashes with Kane at WrestleMania are on here as well.

Three great Hell in a Cell triumphs highlight the collection.

Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at Badd Blood 1997 is worth watching again and again.

Despite how many times fans have seen Taker throw Mankind off the top of the cell, it's hard not to see it one more time.

Add in his bloody encounter inside the steel with Brock Lesnar, and you have several hours of quality viewing ahead of you.

WWE’s Greatest Rivalries: Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart

9 of 11

The Netflix instant version doesn't feature the matches that the DVD version does.

You'll just be getting the long interview with Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart with Jim Ross.

Not every fan is going to want to dig this deeply into Hart and Michaels' turbulent relationship, but many will be fascinated by all the details of how their friendship deteriorated.

They reveal the truth behind the Montreal Screwjob and its aftermath.

Fans of either wrestler and fans intrigued by wrestling history will dig this.

Macho Madness: The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection

10 of 11

Randy Savage's recent passing naturally led fans to reflect on the man's iconic career.

What better way to do that than to look back at some of his finest work in the ring?

The WrestleMania III all-time classic vs. Ricky Steamboat is required viewing for all wrestling fans.  There's plenty more to love on this collection.

Savage takes on Bruno Sammartino, Tito Santana and, of course, Hulk Hogan.

The set includes his bloody and emotional match with Ric Flair at WrestleMania VIII as well as his work against Jake Roberts, Shawn Michaels and the Ultimate Warrior.

His time with WCW is featured on the third disc, so there's plenty more Flair to see as well as the NWO.

The Ladder Match 2: Crash and Burn

11 of 11

Ladder wizard Christian hosts an awesome compilation of ladder matches.

Of course there are a few you'll want to skip, like 3 Count vs. Jung Dragons, but for the most part, this set delivers.

How the Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon WrestleMania classic was not on Volume 1 is mind-boggling.  Though it was one of the first ladder matches in WWE history, it remains one of its greatest.

In addition to that Wrestling Observer Newsletter Match of the Year, the 2008 winner of that award appears as well.

Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels' 2008 feud had a plethora of great matches, and their ladder match was the most phenomenal.

Lesser-known gems like Katie Lea vs. Beth Phoenix in Ohio Valley Wrestling pair well with more familiar fare like the Money in the Bank matches from WrestleMania 23 and 25.
