UFC 146 Results: Junior Dos Santos Really Is the Best Heavyweight in MMA

Mike HodgesMay 27, 2012

Junior dos Santos made his first successful title defense over Frank Mir at UFC 146 and proved why he is the best heavyweight right now.

The Brazilian looked as sharp as ever, utilizing fast hands and well-timed movement, as he hurt Mir on more than one occasion before finishing him in the second round.

The win gave "Cigano" his ninth consecutive victory and his seventh finish inside the Octagon, improving his professional record to 15-1.

As Dos Santos continues his dominance over the division, it will be difficult to find opponents if he puts on a similar performance like he did against Mir. Some fans will point to former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez following his one-sided beating over Antonio Silva, but after losing to Dos Santos in such devastating fashion, it'd be a hard sell and Velasquez might need one more win to solidify himself as the next challenger.

The 27-year-old Dos Santos has yet to look tested in his past nine bouts and may be the first heavyweight to successfully defend the title more than twice. The heavyweight crown has seen its share of champions, but they all failed to hold on to it. Dos Santos could break that curse.

With precise striking, blazing hand speed and fast footwork, there might not be anyone who can survive with the champion momentarily. Fans have yet to see his jiu-jitsu skills implemented in a fight, but that is also a testament to how good he really is.

Dos Santos' win showed that he has officially arrived as a legitimate champion, erasing doubts of his knockout over Velasquez as a fluke or a lucky punch. And now he can not only add title defense to his name but the fact that he also defeated a former champion effortlessly, cementing himself as the sport's undisputed heavyweight king.
