UFC 146 Prelims Results: What We Learned from Duane Ludwig vs. Dan Hardy
After his fourth loss in a row, welterweight striker Dan Hardy took a year off to expand his game. But at UFC 146, The Outlaw turned to a familiar friend to give him his first win in two and a half years. Hardy used his signature left hook to knock out fellow banger Duane Ludwig in the opening round of the evening's first televised fight.
"You know when you've landed a good shot. You can feel it when it really connects," Hardy told broadcaster Joe Rogan after the fight. "It's just really good to be back."
What We'll Remember from This Fight
Hardy's relief and elation, which were apparent immediately after he landed that decisive left. When Ludwig collapsed to the canvas, Hardy momentarily (and almost involuntarily) raised his hands in celebration before rushing to seal the deal with ground strikes. It was a telling moment for a fighter who came in under great pressure to perform, and came through with flying colors.
What We Learned About Duane Ludwig
He's a good fighter, but that chin of his may be a fatal flaw. Hardy's hook landed flush, but it was still a little jarring to watch Ludwig fall dead away like a toy robot removed from its power source. It was Ludwig's fifth loss by KO or TKO (not counting a TKO loss to Darren Elkins as a result of an ankle injury).
What We Learned About Dan Hardy
His game really has improved. Hardy (23-10 1) very publicly changed gyms and started working with noted grappling experts (Frank Mir among them). His striking was crisp and clean like 7UP, and while grappling never really came close to happening, Hardy didn't shy away from working in the clinch and even went for a takedown.
What's Next for Duane Ludwig
It's not dark yet for the Muay Thai standout, but it's getting there. Ludwig (now 21-13) has lost two straight and is 2-4 during his current stint in the Octagon. He'll need a win in his next fight. Keith Wisniewski, another exciting fighter who, amidst a two-fight losing streak of his own, could be a prime candidate for a loser-leaves-town match.
What's Next for Dan Hardy
How about young James Head, coming off a win over prospect Papy Abedi? Head is well-rounded and loves to go for submissions. This matchup could shine a brighter light on this new and improved Dan Hardy.
