NBA Rumors: 5 Teams That Desperately Need Stan Van Gundy's No-B.S. Attitude

Stephen BabbJun 7, 2018

Stan Van Gundy may no longer have a job with the Orlando Magic, but that doesn't mean he'll be out of work for long...unless he wants to be, of course.

Based on what Chris Broussard's league sources told him, ESPN is reporting that Van Gundy may be on the Charlotte Bobcats' shortlist of head coaching options:

"

The Bobcats also have permission from the Indiana Pacers to speak with assistant Brian Shaw and from the Los Angeles Lakers to speak with assistant coach Quin Snyder, the sources said. Shaw's interview will take place after the Pacers' season ends.

The sources said Charlotte also will reach out to former Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. The team is not expected to make a decision until after next week's draft lottery, at the earliest.

"

Van Gundy would surely have his work cut out for him in Charlotte, and there's no telling how interested he'd be in the gig.

Van Gundy could at least count on a premium lottery pick adding some life to the Bobcats lineup. Charlotte has the best odds of landing the first overall selection in this Wednesday's NBA Draft Lottery. Should the club select Anthony Davis (a fairly safe prediction at this point), the Bobcats would at least be headed in the right direction.

With a young core that includes rookies Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo, this roster has its share of raw talent.

The next step, of course, is finding a coach who can develop that talent and ultimately get the most out of it. Charlotte's front office is nowhere close to fielding a finished product on the court, but it needs a coach who can demand the most from these guys in a time of transitional rebuilding.

Stan Van Gundy is a proven commodity, and you can be assured that will work in his favor should he pursue another coaching position.

And while the Bobcats may be the only team linked to Van Gundy so far, there are more than a few teams out there who could use his gritty sensibilities. Here are five more clubs who, at least in a perfect world, might have Stan running the show.

Miami Heat

1 of 5

There may be absolutely zero chance it ever happens, but Stan Van Gundy would be a pretty good fit with the team he coached from 2003 to December 2005.

During his stretch with the Miami Heat, Van Gundy won over 60 percent of his games before officially resigning, at which point team president Pat Riley took over and led the team to a title in 2006.

Given what we can only imagine to have been a rocky history with the franchise, this isn't a reunion for which any of us should hold our breaths.

But, it does make some sense.

Current head coach Erik Spoelstra has obviously done a solid job with his superstar-studded team, but he's also letting the lunatics run the asylum.

His willingness to turn the other cheek when Dwyane Wade gave him a nationally-televised earful may have spared his star some deserved humiliation, but it sent a terrible message to the rest of the roster.

Though a guy like Van Gundy is exactly what this overly self-assured locker room needs, there's little doubt Miami's much-hyped trio of stars doesn't exactly see it that way.

Sacramento Kings

It's not so much that the Sacramento Kings need Stan Van Gundy so much as the fact that second-year center DeMarcus Cousins needs him.

Before he was fired by the organization, head coach Paul Westphal announced that DeMarcus Cousins had demanded a trade. Cousins then denied he did any such thing.

It was all very confusing.

Cousins may seem to be headed in the right direction for now, but there's no denying this remains a very young team in need of some tough love. There's tons of talent on Sacramento's roster, and it's only a matter of time (and coaching) before these guys start to figure it out.

Washington Wizards

3 of 5

The Washington Wizards took the first step toward a pretty radical facelift by trading JaVale McGee and Nick Young in two separate deals before the trade deadline.

Though both very talented players, McGee and Young lacked the kind of experience and winning edge with which the franchise hopes to infuse its roster. Their exits had more to do with the team's preferred cultural direction than it did acquiring better players.

Suffice it to say, this club's makeover isn't finished yet.

Stan Van Gundy would help the Wizards grow up fast. He's not a guy who settles, and it's hard to imagine Washington showing the same kind of lackluster effort under a coach who wouldn't even think of tolerating it.

Washington hasn't been linked to Stan just yet, but the team was interested in his brother Jeff before he took a job with the Houston Rockets...for whatever that's worth.

Atlanta Hawks

While the Hawks will be holding on to Larry Drew for at least another year, he may be a bit too much of a "player's coach" for a team that desperately needs a jolt.

He hasn't given anyone reason to believe he's a bad coach, but that doesn't mean he's the best fit.

Stan Van Gundy might get more out of an under-performing Joe Johnson, and it seems like he'd at the very least improve Josh Smith's spotty shot selection.

He'd also bring as much energy to this franchise as its entire roster combined, an energy Hawks fans have been lacking as well.

Atlanta has fielded a solid team for at least the last four seasons, but it's struggled to get over the hump.

Whatever the comparative merits of Drew and Van Gundy, sometimes a change of pace is in order.

ABC and ESPN Broadcast Team

5 of 5

OK, so maybe it's not the kind of team you're thinking of, but who said Stan Van Gundy had to stick with coaching?

His brother didn't.

And while play-by-play announcer Mike Breen and color analyst Jeff Van Gundy do a fine job on ABC and ESPN NBA telecasts, they're missing just one thing: More Van Gundy.

It's almost hard to imagine the deafening, stereophonic truth emanating from these sage basketball minds.

The Van Gundy brothers are supremely entertaining, of course, but they're also more than willing to speak their minds–even, if not especially, when it's bound to ruffle someone's feathers.

Of course, the brutally honest duo would be a nightmare for the sacrosanct powers that be in the NBA, but it'd be a dream for just about everyone else.
