Arsenal FC: Gunners' 10 Greatest Wins in the Emirates

Charlie MelmanMay 31, 2018

Though Arsenal have not won any trophies since their move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium, they certainly have many memories to cherish.

From late drama to great stories, Gunners fans have been treated to some truly outstanding moments since Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial match was played in 2006, and the Emirates has truly been adopted as Arsenal's new home.

Sure, the club has had its share of disappointments and collapses in recent years, and many of them have taken place within their own stadium's walls.

But, on the back of a season that produced many fine victories, let's focus on some of the best in the brief but full history of the Emirates Stadium.

As always, if you disagree with a selection or have something to add, don't hesitate to leave a comment.

Arsenal 2-1 Dinamo Zagreb

1 of 10

In this, Arsenal's first win at the Emirates, the Gunners did not look anything like the side that had gone to the Champions League Final only a few months before.

Sluggish from the start, future Gunner Eduardo gave Zagreb an early goal that the visitors were content to hold on to for the rest of the match.

But that Arsenal side was not one to go down easily, and after a sweet goal from Freddie Ljungberg, Mathieu Flamini netted a dramatic winner in stoppage time to give the Gunners their first win in their new home.

Arsenal 3-0 Tottenham

2 of 10

The 2006-07 season was a season of firsts for Arsenal, and in the first North London Derby held at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners emerged decisive winners.

After an early Emmanuel Adebayor strike, stand-in captain Gilberto added two penalties to seal the win beyond any doubt amid periods of Arsenal dominance.

Matches between Arsenal and Tottenham are always memorable ones, but the fact that the Gunners beat the Spurs so thoroughly in their first meeting at the Emirates added to the memorability of the match.

Arsenal 2-1 Manchester United

3 of 10

One of the most famous matches in the history of the Emirates is, of course, another chapter in one of the Premier League's greatest rivalries.

Arsenal would have been happy with a draw after Robin van Persie scored in the 83rd minute to level the score at 1-1, but Thierry Henry was having none of that. On this night, he would makes sure that the Gunners took all three points.

Injured for much of the inaugural season at the Emirates, the Frenchman did not leave many moments to remember him by during his final year. But this was something else.

With the whole team pushing forward in stoppage time, Emmanuel Eboue lofted in a cross which Henry powerfully headed above the reach of Edwin van der Sar to send the entire crowd of 60,000 into euphoria.

Arsenal 4-0 Cardiff City

4 of 10

On what was perhaps the most emotional night in the brief history of the Emirates Stadium, striker Eduardo made a dramatic return from a year-long injury layoff with two goals against Cardiff City.

The Croat wasted little time getting back on the score sheet when the match started, scoring the first goal of the game in the 20th minute by using the same poacher's instincts that made him so revered at the club.

Shortly before he was substituted, he had his second goal from the penalty spot to seal the FA Cup tie for Arsenal.

Every fan had to cheer for Eduardo, who did not deserve what happened to him the season before, but came back just as strong.

Arsenal 5-0 Porto

5 of 10

Down 2-1 to Porto after a first leg loss in Portugal, Arsenal needed to win at home to make it past the Champions League Round of 16.

And oh, how they did.

A Nicklas Bendtner hat trick highlighted a massive 5-0 victory for the home side that was achieved without injured captain Cesc Fabregas or Robin van Persie.

But the goal of the night was an incredible individual effort from Samir Nasri that saw him skip past several Porto defenders and fire a low rocket into the far corner from a nearly impossible angle.

European nights like that do not come around very often, and this was one to cherish.

Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea

6 of 10

Amid a dreary period two seasons ago, Arsenal turned in arguably their best performance of the campaign, thrashing Chelsea 3-1 at home.

It was one of those rare nights on which everything went right for the Gunners. They pressed their opponents high up the pitch for the whole match, and the Blues were so unsettled that they gave the ball away twice in quick succession, which led to two Arsenal goals.

Even to someone watching the match from thousands of miles away, the feeling of euphoria throughout the Emirates was palpable, as the fans were treated to their side playing at their absolute best.

Arsenal 2-1 Barcelona

7 of 10

Every time I remember this glorious night, I get shivers down my spine. That is how special a victory it was.

Nobody gave Arsenal and their leaky defence a chance to beat Barcelona, even at home. The Catalans were at their swashbuckling best at the time, and looked absolutely unstoppable.

Indeed, it looked like they would not be stopped on the night, as a dominating performance by Barcelona helped them carry a 1-0 lead deep into the match.

But after an improbable Robin van Persie strike, Andrei Arshavin wonderfully finished off a classic counterattack by slotting a shot past Victor Valdes to send all of Goonerdom into ecstasy.

Arsenal 1-0 Leeds United

8 of 10

Even the best Hollywood screenwriter could not come up with a better script than that which Thierry Henry lived out on his return to the Emirates against Leeds.

Henry had a history of great battles with Leeds, and it was only fitting that he would dispatch a wonderful pass from Alex Song into the back of the net in trademark fashion to give Arsenal a classic 1-0 win.

One could sense the entire Emirates Stadium coming alive that night, as the prodigal son returned in stunning fashion to send Arsenal to the next round of the FA Cup.

That was truly a moment that every witness will not be able to forget.

Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

9 of 10

This match was the definite turning point in Arsenal's season; the juncture where the team was choiced with humiliation or retaliation. Bacary Sagna chose the latter.

Down 2-0 at home, the supporters were about to mutiny, and not even Arsene Wenger seemed to be safe. But up stepped Sagna, who decided he was having none of that and smashed in a header while out of position to spark a massive comeback.

Arsenal would go on to score four more goals that day, and the Gunners would soon go ahead of the Spurs and into third place, which they would not relinquish through the end of the season.

Arsenal 1-0 Manchester City

10 of 10

It is hard to forget the day that Arsenal supposedly ended Manchester City's title challenge with a trademark win at home that was as important to the Gunners as to their opponents.

Arsenal was clearly the better team throughout the match, but they continually struggled to put the ball in the back of the net due to a stern City resistance.

It was clear that it would take a moment of brilliance to win it, and it was Arsenal's Mikel Arteta who provided it late on with a thunderous strike past a helpless Joe Hart into the bottom corner.

That victory provided the Gunners with a massive boost for the run-in, and went a long way towards securing third place, which was an almost unthinkable achievement at the start of the season.

Perhaps not the most significant match in the history of the Emirates, but one of the most thrilling.
