Jacksonville Jaguars: 5 Storylines Proving That Minicamp Is Overrated

Nate DunlevyJun 7, 2018

Fans miss football in the offseason and breathlessly await any update about their favorite team.

Unfortunately, this desire for information often leads to fans fixating on unimportant storylines and buying into the unwarranted hype of players' progress.

Here are five storylines from prior minicamps that show why Jacksonville Jaguars fans should simmer down before getting too excited about players having good (or bad) minicamps.

Jerry Porter, 2008

1 of 5

Jerry Porter was going to lift the 2008 Jaguars to playoffs. In fact, one could argue the Jags would have won the 2007 Super Bowl if only they had had him.

One could argue that. If one were insane.

Porter was the talk of the 2008 minicamp season despite battling a hamstring injury. He was a colossal disappointment in the regular season, however. He posted just 11 catches for 181 yards in his only season in Jacksonville.

He was out of football after playing just 10 games in a Jaguars uniform.

Kirk Morrison Just Wants to Win 2010

2 of 5

After having played his entire career in Oakland, Kirk Morrison was tired of losing and happy to come to Jacksonville.

He couldn't be happier to play in a place where everyone wanted to make the playoffs.

While Morrison played decent football in Jacksonville, the Jaguars finished the season 8-8 and didn't make the playoffs. He was gone after the 2010 season.

Morrison then went to another team with a strong track record of winning: Buffalo.

Troy Williamson, 2008

3 of 5

Remember Joe Porter? Troy Williamson was his karmic twin.

Williamson was impressive in the 2008 minicamp, and some thought he could have a rebirth in Jacksonville.

Williamson did manage to stay on the roster for a couple of years as a kick returner, but caught only eight passes in 10 games as a Jaguar.

Oh, he had one carry for one yard, too.

Revamped Defense, 2010

4 of 5

The 2009 Jaguars fielded one of the worst defenses in football (28th in DVOA), so Jack Del Rio went to work giving it a full overhaul.

The 2010 Jags would be a fierce unit, completely rebuilt.

Things did in fact change in 2010—they became the worst defense in football.

Eventually, all the drat picks paid off as the Jaguars jumped in the rankings in 2011, but all the 2010 talk proved to be nothing but hot air.

Big Potential, 2009

5 of 5

Jack Del Rio had everyone convinced that the disastrous 2008 season was an aberration.

The 2009 Jaguars were on the rise, having been transformed almost over night. David Garrard was in great shape and the Jaguars were ready to strike.

Garrard and the Jaguars did, in fact, improve.

The 2009 Jags won seven games instead of five. Garrard's passer rating soared from 81.7 all the way to 83.5.

It was an overnight transformation indeed.
