Virginia Tech Football: Projecting Logan Thomas' Stats for Each Game

Bryan ManningMay 22, 2012

The Virginia Tech Hokies enter the 2012 season having to replace eight starters on the offensive side of the ball. Fortunately for the Hokies, rising junior quarterback Logan Thomas returns.

If Thomas progresses as rapidly as he did in 2011, he could find himself a top-10 pick in the 2013 NFL draft. It won't be easy, as Thomas will have four new starters on the offensive line.

The Hokies could be more of a pass-first team in 2012, at least in the early part of the season, as the Hokies return three senior wide receivers.

It is never too early to look ahead to the 2012 schedule and project how Thomas will fare in each game.

Monday, September 3rd, 2012 vs. Georgia Tech

1 of 12

Georgia Tech has given the Hokies trouble in recent years.

However, the Yellow Jackets don't return a standout defense.

Look for Thomas to involve senior wide receivers Marcus Davis, D.J. Coles and Dyrell Roberts early and often.

Thomas: 22-of-35, 247 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Thomas has 38 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Saturday, September 8th, 2012 vs. Austin Peay

2 of 12

Austin Peay is coming off a 3-8 season and don't expect to be much of a challenge for the Hokies.

This will be an excellent time for the Hokies to experiment with their running game.

Also, if the team gets a big lead, Thomas may get plenty of rest.

Thomas: 12-of-15, 217 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions. Thomas has no rushing attempts and was not sacked.

The Hokies face their old Big East rival and soon-to-be ACC rival for the first time in several years.

Going to Pittsburgh is always tough, but the Panthers will have their fourth head coach in just three years.

Thomas: 19-of-31, 204 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions. Thomas finishes with 65 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012 vs. Bowling Green

4 of 12

The Falcons finished 2011 with a record of 5-7 but return several starters.

Bowling Green has been a tough opponent in past years and is best remembered as the school that gave Urban Meyer his start.

Look for the Hokies to get the running game going even more in this game.

Thomas: 16-of-24, 194 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions. Thomas goes for 48 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Saturday, September 29th, 2012 vs. Cincinnati

5 of 12

Just a few years ago, the Bearcats faced the Hokies in the Orange Bowl with the Hokies prevailing.

Cincinnati isn't as formidable as it was in that year, but the Bearcats are coming off a 7-6 season and return a solid defense.

Thomas: 18-of-28, 229 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. Thomas rushes for 19 yards on seven carries.

Saturday, October 6th, 2012 at North Carolina

6 of 12

There hasn't been a bigger underachiever in recent seasons than North Carolina.

The Tar Heels continue to put several players in the NFL, especially on defense, but continue to toil in mediocrity.

The Heels have been tough on the Hokies in recent seasons, beating them once in Blacksburg.

North Carolina has a new coach in Larry Fedora, but the Heels return several talented players on defense and will provide the Hokies with a stiff challenge.

Thomas: 23-of-34, 275 yards, two touchdowns, one interception. Thomas has 63 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Saturday, October 13th, 2012 vs. Duke

7 of 12

Believe it or not, the Blue Devils have been tough on the Hokies in the last five years.

While they have yet to come away with a win against the Hokies, Duke has often stayed in games beyond their talent level, giving the Hokies quite a scare.

Head coach David Cutcliffe always has Duke prepared, and he returns some good players on the defensive side of the ball.

Thomas: 17-of-27, 195 yards, one touchdown, one interception. Thomas finishes with 29 yards rushing.

Saturday, October 20th, 2012 at Clemson

8 of 12

The Hokies couldn't solve the Tigers in 2011.

In two meetings between the two teams, the Tigers outscored the Hokies 61-13.

When they faced in December in the ACC Championship game, the Hokies were playing better football than the Tigers, but Clemson was much more physical up front and gave the Hokies offensive line fits.

Both teams have lost several key players. Keep in mind the Hokies will have four new starters on the offensive line.

Thomas: 20-of-31, 238 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions. Thomas has 43 yards rushing.

Thursday, November 1st, 2012 at Miami

9 of 12

The Hurricanes took the Hokies to the limit in their contest in 2011, with the Hokies getting a late touchdown from Thomas to pull away.

The 'Canes lost several starters but brought in an outstanding recruiting class.

Miami will be solid on defense, and the Hokies will have their hands full in Coral Gables.

Thomas: 16-of-28, 241 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions. Thomas also has his biggest rushing game, finishing with 74 yards.

Thursday, November 8th, 2012 vs. Florida State

10 of 12

This game will be the Hokies' biggest challenge in 2012.

The Seminoles return several players from a defense ranked No. 4 in the country in total defense in 2011.

The Hokies have an impressive defense of their own, but it will be up to Thomas to pull this one out for the Hokies.

Thomas: 25-of-38, 297 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions. Thomas also has a solid game running the ball, finishing with 57 yards and one touchdown.

Saturday, November 17th, 2012 at Boston College

11 of 12

The Eagles, under head coach Frank Spaziani always play tough, hard-nosed defense.

They lost their best player to the NFL in linebacker Luke Kuechly.

Depending on what happens in the previous two games, will the Hokies overlook the Eagles?

Thomas: 19-of-28, 211 yards, one touchdown, one interception. Thomas also finishes the game with 38 yards rushing.

Saturday, November 24th, 2012 vs. Virginia

12 of 12

Although the Hokies clobbered the Cavaliers 38-0 in last year's game, Virginia will be much better in 2012.

Under coach Mike London, the Cavaliers have shown tremendous progress in three years, and another solid recruiting class will put the UVa a bit closer to the Hokies.

The Cavaliers return several starters from what was a solid defensive unit in 2011. Can the Cavaliers get pressure on Thomas?

Thomas: 21-of-29, 227 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions. Thomas finishes with 44 yards rushing.
