Stanford Football: Say Hello to the Andrew Luck Director of Offense
Andrew Luck played quite a tremendous role in the resurrection of Stanford football over the last three seasons. The quarterback helped raise the profile of the Cardinal program through his Heisman finalist runs and the BCS bowl trips in the last two seasons. Luck furthered that push when he was taken No. 1 overall in the draft.
Well, it appears that Stanford is not done with Andrew Luck just yet.
The offensive coordinator position is now called the "Andrew Luck Director of Offense" out in Palo Alto. However, this is not Luck's doing. According to GoStanford.com, an anonymous donor has endowed the position and given it the title of the superstar quarterback. A pretty hefty chunk of change had to be dropped in order to endow the position, and in naming it after Andrew Luck, the donor helped ensure that the quarterback's legacy would not soon be forgotten on campus.
For those of us from schools other than Stanford, this practice seems a bit odd, to say the least. We have head coaches, offensive coordinators and athletic directors. That's all they are.
The fine folks at Stanford take it up a notch, though. They have the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football, the Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics and now, the Andrew Luck Director of Offense.
It's an interesting practice, but one that helps drive donations. And in this case, it keeps the aura of Andrew Luck hovering over the program.
As coaches change and years pass, the Andrew Luck Director of Offense will remain as a reminder to those in the position. We have seen things such as the Ring of Honor and sacred numbers used to carry on players' legacies; this anonymous donation to title a position is a unique and special move at Stanford.
