Anthony Davis: Best Possible NBA Draft Lottery Landing Spots for Kentucky Star
No draft lottery in sports is more unpredictable than the NBA's, as almost every team in the running seems to have a real chance to come away with the top pick. The lottery has been in place since 1985 and the team with the best odds of landing the top pick has only managed to win the lottery on four occasions, with the Orlando Magic being the last in 2004.
The Charlotte Bobcats hold that distinction this season, and while they desperately need a franchise player like Kentucky forward Anthony Davis, past results suggest that they won't get him. No team with less than a 1.52 percent chance to get the top pick has ever done so, meaning there are nine teams that can realistically net Davis.
Here are the three lottery teams with a chance to grab the first-overall pick that would provide the best respective situations for Davis.
Portland Trailblazers
Thanks to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets, the Portland Trail Blazers will have two picks in the lottery, but only one of them gives them a realistic shot at the first pick.
The Nets' pick gives the Blazers the sixth-best chance to get the top-overall selection with 7.5 percent odds. Over the past seven lotteries, teams with odds worse than 7.5 percent have won four times, so there is no question that Portland is very much in the hunt.
Of all the possibilities, Portland has to be the most attractive landing spot for Davis. The Blazers surprisingly missed the playoffs this past season, but they have enough talent to get right back in the hunt. LaMarcus Aldridge is becoming a perennial All-Star as a power forward and his style of play would likely mesh very well with Davis. On top of that, Portland has some solid wing players in Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews, while point guard Raymond Felton has his moments as well.
The Blazers are a top player away from true contention and Davis could be that guy.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The third-worst team has won the lottery more times than any other spot with five, so history suggests that the Cleveland Cavaliers are in an awfully good spot.
The Cavs shockingly got the top selection in last year's draft as the pick that they received from the Los Angeles Clippers won the lottery, despite the fact that the Clippers were only the eighth-worst team in the league the previous season. Their odds are much more advantageous this season, though.
Cleveland hit with its top pick last season as it took Duke point guard Kyrie Irving, who won the Rookie of the Year Award and looks like a legitimate star. Irving didn't have much help this season, but if he were to have a monstrous interior presence in Davis to take some of the pressure off of him, it would be immense for the Cavs.
It looked like it might take a decade for the Cavaliers to get over the sting of losing LeBron James, but the healing process will be much faster if they are able to get Davis.
Sacramento Kings
They may have finished the season with the NBA's fifth-worst record, but there is a lot to like about the Sacramento Kings.
Guard Tyreke Evans and center DeMarcus Cousins are both extremely promising, young players with a very bright future ahead of them. The Kings need some supplemental talent in order to compete in the stacked Western Conference, though, and the addition of Anthony Davis would be absolutely huge for them.
Sacramento has a 7.6 percent chance of getting the top pick and it would be a major coup for an organization that has been on thin ice for the past several years. Pairing Davis with Cousins would immediately give the Kings one of the most dynamic interior duos in the game, though, and it would give Evans a lot more room to work with.
The Kings are a team with a lot of talent that is looking to put it all together, and Davis would be the adhesion they need.
