Milwaukee Brewers in the News: Feb. 3

Brewers News

The Wisconsin State Journal says the Brewers are making a mistake by allowing Yovani Gallardo to pitch in the World Baseball Classic. I think the decision to allow Yo to pitch is respectful, but at the same time I agree that it is not in the Brewers best interest—and that is an understatement.

In (sorta) related news (sorta), I’m currently enjoying a Tecate. Yeah, it’s no Negra Modelo, but its pretty decent.

Brewers TV announcer Brian Anderson has a new blog post. I really enjoy his few paragraphs on Prince Fielder. It think it’s time for all Brewers fans to whole-heartedly dive back onto the Prince bandwagon. Yeah, the two-year deal surely doesn’t mean that he’ll be a longtime Brewer, but still...

The blog also talks about the Brewers starting pitching.

He says the Brewers don’t feel like the remaining free agent starters are worth what they’ll demand. As frustrating as it is to see the Brewers content to stay with who they’ve got, it’s difficult to disagree. Plus, as the blog mentions, they’ll have the payroll flexibility mid-season to make another splash via trade if the opportunity presents itself.

Baseball Prospectus’ annual Pecota HR projections are out. Both Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder are in the top five. They project Braun as second with 37 and Prince fifth with 33. I think they’ll both surpass those numbers. I certainly think Ryan Howard will hit more than 40.

Jason Kendall is named as the fourth best defensive catcher (along with a couple others) by this blog.

Minor Leagues

Here is a blog post about Brewers minor league pitcher Cody Scarpetta.

NL Central

The Pirates are the third “largest” professional sports franchise in Pittsburgh, by their own admission. Well, you suck, Pirates. In all fairness though, the Brewers and their fans feel your pain.

The Cubs have continued making really underwhelming moves. They trade Rich Hill to Baltimore and Michael Wuertz to Oakland.

Other News

Oliver Perez has finally signed with the Mets. It looks like he’s getting a three-year $36 million contract. Not worth it. The story also notes that the Dodgers are still in regular contact with Randy Wolf and are looking at Braden Looper as a fallback plan. Personally, I’m sorta glad the Brewers are likely to not sign any of those guys.

While Perez agreed to a hefty contract, Sheets is still left jobless. Apparently his talks with the Rangers have died a bit. Man, Sheets f*cked up.

This Cubs blog notes that with Tampa’s signing of Brian Shouse, his fan club site lives on. I disagree with one thing though. The site is NOT disturbing—its hilarious. Go figure lame ass Cubs fans can’t handle a “little” penis. What’s up with that, bros?

P.S.: Your GM is a moron, and we’re grateful for that.

I saw this on PTI today, but here is a local article about how much skrilla Bud Selig made in 2007. Whatever, that’s hardly $17.4 million more than me.
