John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis: Match Proves WWE Should Always Swerve Fans
Countless WWE fans were disappointed by the John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis main-event match at last night's Over The Limit PPV. Fans have labeled the match “boring” and “predictable”—specifically because of Big Show’s predictable involvement in the match.
Last Monday night on Raw, John Laurinaitis received a letter from the WWE Board of Directors stating that any superstar who interfered in his match with John Cena would be immediately terminated.
Fans knew that Laurinaitis would need help in order to beat John Cena, but which non-superstar could possibly help him?

Ultimately, fans saw Big Show’s interference coming from a hundred miles away. This is because John Laurinaitis had recently terminated Big Show and helping Laurinaitis would help Big Show get his job back.
So what?
Fans (including myself) often complain when WWE swerves them. Fans (including myself) have claimed that WWE should go for the best possible story—not the most unpredictable story.
At Royal Rumble, fans expected Chris Jericho to win the Rumble match, but Sheamus won instead. Fans complained.
At WrestleMania XXVIII, fans expected John Cena to defeat The Rock, but The Rock beat Cena. Fans complained.
At Extreme Rules, fans expected Kharma to return, but Layla returned instead. Fans complained. Also at Extreme Rules, fans expected Brock Lesnar to pin John Cena, but Cena pinned Lesnar. Fans complained.
Last night at Over The Limit, fans expected Big Show to interfere in the John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis match, and Big Show did in fact interfere. Fans…complained. Why?
According to relationship expert David DeAngelo,
"There is an area of the human brain called "Broca's Region" that is constantly anticipating what is about to happen, then discounting the predictable. In other words, the more predicable you are, the faster you will be considered BORING.
"
Perhaps it’s time for fans to stop complaining when WWE swerves them. Perhaps WWE is right to swerve the fans and go for the most unpredictable story rather than what the fans think is the best possible story.
Ultimately, WWE knows what we all painfully realized last night: predictable is boring.
