New LeBron James Rumors Update NBA Free Agency Decision Timeline Amid Cavs, Warriors Buzz

As another day is likely to pass with LeBron James not making a decision about his next team, the status quo appears to be unchanged.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday on The Pat McAfee Show that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers are perceived to be in a group by themselves. Charania also suggested that James "is getting closer and closer to making a decision."

James appears to be enjoying the way in which the NBA world is hanging on his ultimate choice.

The 22-time All-Star recorded a live edition of his Mind the Game podcast with the Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton on Thursday. He leaned into the speculation over his free agency without providing any answers.

James did at least respond to one fan question about his mindset. He said he wants to "fit in" with whatever roster he's joining while still providing some leadership.

What makes this all equal parts intriguing and frustrating from a fan perspective is that there probably isn't another domino to fall that hints at James' preference.

The franchises that are still in the hunt have made their big trades and signings, and they don't need to scramble and create a bunch of salary cap space to accommodate LeBron's contract. He's almost certainly taking a minimum deal or fitting into a cap exception.

That makes it more difficult to simultaneously handicap James' free agency and understand why he's dragging it out this long. He's not even taking direct meetings with prospective suitors, who are instead working through his agent, Rich Paul.

The surefire Hall of Famer knows the lay of the land. He understands the strengths and weakness of each theoretical landing spot, and nothing big is going to change in the coming days or weeks.

James can make an informed judgment any day now, but he's clearly in no rush.
