Trick Williams Talks WWE Unreal, Sami Zayn, Carmelo Hayes, SummerSlam and More in B/R Interview
United States champion Trick Williams has enjoyed one of the most meteoric rises of anyone in pro wrestling over the past year, and fans will have the chance to relive it with WWE Unreal.
When Season 3 of the acclaimed docuseries drops July 21 on Netflix, Williams will be a key figure, highlighting his arrival on the WWE main roster and his ascent to becoming United States champion at WrestleMania 42.
Despite his huge personality, Williams admitted to having some hesitancy when approached about being part of WWE Unreal, but he went on to explain what ultimately made him decide to participate.

"You know, the funny thing is I definitely had to think about it when they brought it to me," Williams said. "But then I was thinking, 'What is there to be scared of?' My name is Trick Williams. Trick is an extension of my original name. My birth name is Matrick. If you add the 'M-A' to Trick, you get Trick Williams. So as you leave the cameras on a little bit longer, when you hit that red button and you dive into who Trick Williams really is, you will get a piece of Matrick.
"But luckily for me, Matrick and Trick Williams are the same person. Matrick just gives you a little bit more detail of how Trick Williams became Trick Williams, and that's what you're gonna get when you tune into Unreal. How Trick Williams became Trick Williams. Let's talk about it."
WWE Unreal provides a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of WWE, and it often allows fans the rare opportunity to see what their favorite Superstars are really like as people.
Trick suggested that he is looking forward to that aspect of Unreal because it will allow viewers to see the work he puts in, while also gaining a greater understanding of the relationship he has with his wife and fellow WWE Superstar Lash Legend.
"I'll be honest with you, I don't know what they're gonna put on there," Williams said. "We gave them so much, I don't know what's gonna be shown. But I think that we'll see the authenticity of who Trick Williams is. This confidence isn't bottled and isn't put on like the coat that I wear. It's a lifestyle that I live every single day. That comes from a lifestyle of winning, losing, taking chances, getting to the top, all the way back down to the bottom. And being able to rebuild over and over and over again. That's how confidence is built.
"That's why Trick Williams lives the lifestyle that he lives because he's been through the fire for years. You're able to just see the passion and see the things he does to keep his mind clear, how Lash Legend is his support system and he's her support system. All the things we do to make sure we're ready to perform at a very, very high level. All these things are so important for Unreal."
After a dominant run in NXT that saw him hold the NXT Championship twice and North American Championship once, in addition to becoming a one-time TNA world champion, Williams got called up to the main roster in January and made an instant impact.
The first thing he did was confront Sami Zayn, and their feud continued in the months that followed, leading up to a United States Championship match between them at WrestleMania 42.
Trick named the U.S. title win as his favorite moment thus far on WWE's main roster, and one that he is looking forward to seeing play out on Unreal.
"It was just a beautiful moment, Williams said. "Just think about how fast your life can change. At that point, four months on the main roster, winning a WrestleMania match against a future Hall of Famer. Let's talk about the Gingerbread Man [Zayn] for a second. That was no easy feat. So to be able to have that magical moment at WrestleMania, I don't take it for granted."
Speaking to Williams' considerable star power, Zayn managed to transition from his rivalry with Trick right into the WWE Championship scene with Cody Rhodes and Gunther.
Zayn beat them in a Triple Threat match at Night of Champions to become WWE champion for the first time in his career, although he did drop the title nine days later to CM Punk.
Williams gave Zayn his proverbial flowers for that accomplishment, while also discussing why he and Sami meshed so well together.
"That just lets you know how great of an opponent he was and everything he brings to the business," Trick said. "He's Sami Zayn for a reason, so you gotta put some respect on his name. But it also tells you who Trick Williams is. In his first feud, on his first day on SmackDown, he interrupted Sami Zayn and told him, 'You will respect Mr. Lemon Pepper Stepper.' And the people knew that I wasn't lying. It was just a beautiful situation. Me and Sami are so polar opposites, so it just worked."
Trick has now been the United States champion for nearly three months, dating back to WrestleMania, and he has not been shy about putting his own spin on the title.
On a recent episode of SmackDown, Williams introduced his custom U.S. title belt, complete with a white fur strap. The title fits his aesthetic perfectly, and he gave all the credit to his friend and manager Lil Yachty.
"Yachty said he wanted to do something a little special," Williams said. "Shout out to my boy Yachty, taking the time and doing his job. Some perceive him as my creative director, my personal producer to make sure that all things are fit for entertainment consumption to a very, very high level. He said, 'Trick, we need a title that's gonna fit you. We're gonna get you your very own legacy title.' So, he hand-directed and sculpted the title himself and it's a work of art. It's beautiful."
Trick's first match after the introduction of the new belt was against his longtime friend and rival Carmelo Hayes.
Williams and Hayes began as allies in NXT and they ran roughshod over the rest of the roster for an extended period of time, but they eventually broke up, which allowed Trick to blossom into a singles star in his own right.
The audience always seems to be captivated when Trick and Melo are working together in a promo segment or match, and Williams gave his thoughts on why that is.
"The truth is, I know Melo like the back of my hand," Trick said. "I said that in a promo, but it is the truth. I've known him for a very long time. I came up in the business alongside Carmelo Hayes, and the crazy thing is, we're actually more similar than different. I think that kind of is why things work so well and why they don't work so well at the very same time. Because only one can exist when you have two Superstars of this level and this caliber in one room."
The match between Williams and Hayes was interrupted by a returning Baron Corbin, who attacked both of them and threw a huge wrench into the United States title scene in the process.
With SummerSlam on the horizon in Minneapolis on Aug. 1 and 2, Trick acknowledged that Hayes and Corbin are both potential opponents he could face.
Regardless of who he defends his title against, though, Williams vowed to put on a show for the WWE Universe.
"It's gonna be special," Trick said. "If you thought that WrestleMania was big, you thought the entrance was amazing, wait 'til you see what we got cooking for SummerSlam.
"I don't know who my opponent is. Maybe Carmelo Hayes. Maybe Baron Corbin, that bald-headed bum who wanted to jump on me at the end of the match. Who knows? But one thing will be for sure, two things for certain. Trick Williams will be there. I'm gonna be in rare form, looking good, looking like a million bucks, talking my trash and getting dubs. Let's talk about it."
If Trick makes more magic at SummerSlam just like he did at WrestleMania 42, it is easy to envision him being a central figure in an eventual Season 4 of WWE Unreal as well.
