Backstage WWE Rumors on Bron Breakker, Gunther and More
With WWE SummerSlam on the horizon, the pro wrestling rumor mill continues to churn out the latest on some of the company's top stars.
This collection features the latest on Bron Breakker, his creative position, and his thoughts, as well as previous plans for Gunther this summer, including matchups with some of the biggest stars in the industry.
Bron Breakker Frustrated?
1 of 3
When Bron Breakker betrayed Seth Rollins last October and seemingly took on leadership of The Vision, it appeared as though the second-generation Superstar was on the fast track to a main event push.
He headlined Raw's one-year Netflix anniversary, challenging CM Punk in a losing effort for the World Heavyweight Championship. Since then, he has suffered a hernia injury that kept him out of WrestleMania, feuded with Seth Rollins in a rivalry that was never as hot as it should have been, and lost the deciding match in the program.
Factor in a segment Monday night on Raw when the Badass took a backseat to Maxxine Dupri and Austin Theory, and you have plenty of reason for Breakker to be frustrated.
Which, according to Ibou of Self Made Pro, he is.
Understandably so, too.
Viewers of WWE's Unreal show on Netflix watched Triple H tell Breakker that, the night after WrestleMania 41, he was joining The Vision in a creative move that would launch him into the next stratosphere.
Over one year later, he is a tag team champion with Theory and Monday night on Raw, was the third or fourth most important guy in the segment he was in.
That is a massive failure on the part of creative.
While some will point to the pre-WrestleMania injury and claim that a whole lot of writing had to be shifted around to accommodate it, management that is serious about pushing someone like Breakker finds a way to put him in a prime position.
Instead, he is somewhat of an afterthought right now, in a group that has unequivocally lost a ton of its momentum over the last 16 months.
Original Plans for Gunther at SummerSlam
2 of 3
Brock Lesnar will complete his rivalry with Oba Femi at SummerSlam inside Hell in a Cell. According to Ibou, The Beast was originally slated to battle Gunther at the annual summertime spectacular.
Gunther has squared off with Lesnar before, primarily in Royal Rumble matches. The two have otherwise been kept apart, preserving the moment that they do come face-to-face. If that ever occurs at this point, especially as Lesnar has already teased retirement once.
The Beast Incarnate would be the next logical star for Gunther to retire and would set the former world champion up as the most physically dominant heel on the roster.
While he remains in a high-profile spot, though, it is undeniable that the Austrian-born competitor is nowhere near as hot as he was coming off the Cena victory, which would hamper any proposed rivalry with Lesnar at this point.
That is an indictment on the creative team.
Another Gunther Feud On Hold?
3 of 3
The rivalry with Lesnar is not the only planned feud for The Ring General that was inexplicably put on hold this summer.
The busy Ibou also reported that Gunther was slated to feud with Roman Reigns in the late spring/early summer months, but that never happened, either.
That is a feud that was teased as far back as the WrestleMania post-show, when Gunther defeated Seth "Freakin" Rollins and Reigns bested CM Punk in the main event.
There was no movement on it.
Since then, Gunther has been busy feuding with Cody Rhodes while Reigns has reignited the Bloodline story. At SummerSlam, Reigns will defend against Rollins, interestingly enough, while Gunther, following up on retiring John Cena and AJ Styles by battling, *checks notes*, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis in a match that has yet to be announced.
