Auburn Football Recruiting: Tigers Get Commitment from QB of the Future
Auburn wasn't shy about its goal to sign a pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2013. The Tigers swung and missed on Cooper Bateman of Salt Lake City and Kevin Olsen of Wayne, N.J.—both of whom committed to other schools last week.
The Auburn coaching staff didn't panic. It had a plan.
Jeremy Johnson, a 4-star quarterback from Carver Senior High School in Montgomery, Ala., committed to play football up the road in Auburn starting in 2013. At 6'5" and 215 pounds, Johnson has drawn comparisons to former Tigers quarterback Jason Campbell.
He's rated as the No. 13 pro-style quarterback in the country, according to 247Sports.com. He chose Auburn over offers from LSU and Ole Miss, amongst others.
Just how much of a priority was Johnson? According to Jay G. Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser, he was Auburn's offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler's top quarterback target. Johnson said:
"(Loeffler) said I’m the "chosen one." He said they told the other four or five quarterbacks that they were talking to that I’m the chosen one. I’m the only quarterback that they’re (signing). They’re not going to take any other quarterbacks.
"
Needless to say, Johnson's commitment is a huge coup for the Tigers.
Johnson has a big-time arm and can stretch the field. He needs to work on his accuracy a bit, but that's something that comes with repetition within a system. He also has the athleticism to buy time and make plays in the running game if he needs to.
Kiehl Frazier all but won the starting quarterback job this spring, and he impressed everyone that saw him in the process. While he isn't officially the starter, it's clear that he's the guy for the job for the foreseeable future.
With Frazier on campus for three more seasons, Johnson has plenty of time to get his feet wet and learn the system before stepping into the starting role.
