WWE Over the Limit 2012 Results: Ranking Best Matches of the Night

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Despite the disappointment and high level of predictability in the main event at Over the Limit, there were some matches during Sunday's pay-per-view event that absolutely brought it.

Overall, the night was lacking, but that doesn't mean there weren't a few highlight matches that came close to saving the event. Let's take a look at the best matches.

20-man battle royal

I know it didn't feature marquee names, but I'm a sucker for a big-time (in numbers) battle royal whenever I can get it.

Even though it predictably contains at least five-to-10 "knocked over the ropes but stays in" per match, which get old, I still love them. And this one didn't disappoint.

The eventual winner, Christian, made a surprise winner as he returned from a prolonged absence, and that only added to the excitement.

Among the many highlights of the hectic action were Titus O'Neil and Darren Young teaming up to throw the 9,000 pound (exaggeration, barely) Great Khalil over the ropes, Christian knocking out William Regal (William Regal simply being there) and then Christian spearing Miz as they both stood outside the ropes.

The action was non-stop in this one and it was a good way to get Over the Limit started.

Kofi Kingston and R-Truth defeat Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger

Kingston and R-Truth retained the tag-team titles, but this was an awesome match simply because Kofi and R-Truth were in it.

Which is almost always the case.

Their sheer athleticism and ability to instantly inject energy into a match is matched by no one else. So, even though this one started out slow, the last-two-minute display by Kofi more than made up for it.

The highlights were a Boom Drop and then a Trouble in Paradise for the win. The way he flies through the air is always must-see TV, and it was no different on Sunday night.

CM Punk defeats Daniel Bryan

Considering the past that these two have together, and the friendly, but strong rivalry they have, there was no better match that could have occurred between the two.

Because what occurred was an instant classic.

Punk retained the WWE Championship, but there was far more to it than that.

These two went back and forth for 15 good minutes. There were high-flying moves, hard-slams, injuries that each other attacked, near-falls, near-submissions, and finally, a finish no one saw coming.

After both wrestlers beat the living hell out of each other, Bryan finally got Punk in the Yes Lock and held for a long time. It seemed Punk was done for.

But at the last second, Punk rolled backwards and forced a three-count that secured him a victory. Of course, he tapped out literally a second after he unknowingly grabbed the win, but that doesn't matter.

This match had absolutely everything, it was full of technical brilliance, and probably should have served as the main event.
