WWE Over the Limit Results: Awards for Best Performances of the Night

Brian MaziqueMay 21, 2012

WWE's Over the Limit had its moments, but it may be remembered for what was a ridiculous and shameful main event. Predictably, John Laurinaitis received assistance to beat John Cena and keep his job.

The match itself was an absolute farce, and one that was better suited for a bad episode of Raw or Smackdown, not a pay-per-view.

That said, there were some bright spots.

The best matches of the night were as follows:

Tag-Team Title Match: Kofi Kingston and R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger

Fata Four Way For World Heavyweight Title: Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Randy Orton vs. Chris Jericho

WWE Title Match: CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan

But which one was the match of the night?

Flip through the slideshow to find out about that award, and the rest of the awards for the night's best performances.

Promo of the Night: Santino and Cody Rhodes

1 of 6

The United States Champion and the Intercontinental Champion's bit was pretty funny. The highlight was Santino asking Cody not to "make a pee-pee in his pants."

Santino and Cody Rhodes were informed that their titles could be on the line, and their opponent would be the winner of an impromptu battle royal. The winner of that battle royal was Christian, and he chose Cody as an opponent.

He defeated him to take the championship, but before that Cody and Santino gave us a laugh.

Submission of the Night: Daniel Bryan's Surfboard on CM Punk

2 of 6

This was a sick maneuver by Bryan.

He really showed off his athleticism, flexibility and vast array of submission holds in this match. It was difficult to choose which one was the best, but once he sent CM Punk looking skyward, this had to be the choice.

Bryan deserved some kind of recognition after this performance, because he didn't defeat Punk for the title. Both men deserve some love for the dexterity they showed in this sequence.

Finisher of the Night: Kofi Kingston's Sick Trouble in Paradise

3 of 6

How many times can Kofi Kingston amaze us with his athleticism, balance and timing?

I'm not sure what he has to do to be included amongst the elite superstars in the WWE, but there is no superstar that is more exciting.

When he was tagged into the match, he vaulted himself nearly across the entire ring to chop Dolph Ziggler in mid-air, but he wasn't done.

To finish the match, he landed a beautiful Trouble in Paradise on Ziggler. With that move, Kofi and R-Truth retained the titles in one of the night's best matches.

Match of the Night: CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan

4 of 6

This match had it all: great mat work, awesome submission maneuvers, some aerial work and controversy. CM Punk won by pin-fall, but seconds after he scored the pin, Punk tapped out to the Yes Lock.

Bryan was put over big time in this match. You could easily make the case that he got the best of the champion in this match, and that his moves were more spectacular.

The result was the controversial victory by Punk, but what a match these two put on.

Moment of the Night: Big Show Knocks out John Cena

5 of 6

Why is this the moment of the night?

Because the WWE forced it to be. They made us care about it by placing it at the end of the pay-per-view, and by putting so much drama into it.

Big Show seems to have turned on John Cena in an effort to get his job back. He clocked Cena with the lame Weapons of Mass Destruction, knocking him out cold.

Whatever.

No matter how cheesy it was, it will be the biggest carryover going into Monday Night Raw.

On pure in-ring "action," and I use that term as loosely as possible, this match was pitiful, and the WWE should be ashamed for this display.

From the garbage dumped on Laurinaitis, to the water, and the ring bell, it all went on too long. The crowd booed loudly throughout the match, and I booed from my couch.

We will still watch Raw to see what becomes of the Big Show now that he has sold out to John Laurinaitis.

Conclusion

6 of 6

Overall, this pay-per-view was just so-so. This was largely due to the long and boring main event. It wasn't a complete loss thanks to Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Kofi Kingston and the four superstars in the Fatal Four-Way match.

I'd give it a C+ grade, but with a legitimate main event, it could have been an A-.

Here are the complete results for last night's event:

  • Kane defeats Zack Ryder by pin-fall.
  • Christian wins the People Power battle royal
  • Kofi Kingston & R-Truth retain the Tag Team Championship defeating Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger by pin-fall
  • Layla retains Divas Championship by pin-fall over Beth Phoenix
  • Sheamus retains World Heavyweight Championship by pin-fall over Randy Orton, Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio
  • Brodus Clay defeats The Miz by pin-fall
  • Christian defeats Cody Rhodes by pin-fall to win the Intercontinental Championship
  • CM Punk retains the WWE Title over Daniel Bryan by pin-fall
  • Ryback defeats Camacho by pin-fall
  • John Laurinaitis defeats John Cena by pin-fall
