WWE Over the Limit 2012: 5 Outlandish Predictions
The alchemy involved in predicting a WWE pay-per-view has become increasingly precise over the last decade. A combination of recycled storylines, blatant hints and behind-the-scenes reporting has narrowed down the chances of unpredictability.
However, the great selling point of wrestling is that the sport can spring a total surprise on even the most jaded fan. These moments are truly special and help the audience fall in love with wrestling over and over again.
Here are five predictions that are of the latter, far more unlikely kind. The chances of these predictions happening are remote, but their occurrence would be something special.
Randy Orton Will Interfere On Behalf Of John Laurinaitis
1 of 5Randy Orton has been the forgotten man of the WWE for some time, so his delivery of an RKO on John Cena would astonish the masses. In the event of this happening, Orton would be the established superstar that will bring credibility (and one of the major belts) to John Laurinaitis' growing faction.
The immediate question is, why would Orton side with John Laurinaitis? The answer to that question is fairly obvious considering that Laurinaitis is one of the most politically powerful figures in the WWE.
The more interesting question is, what indications have there been to suggest that Orton is about to side with Laurinaitis? Weirdly, the answer to this question is that the lack of interaction Orton has had with John Laurinaitis, especially compared to the other prominent faces, has become suspicious in itself.
In fact, Orton has only been involved with Laurinaitis on two notable occasions since returning from injury. The first time was an RKO on Kane that allowed Teddy Long to pin Laurinaitis on SmackDown. This would normally have resulted in some punishment for Orton, but his involvement was conveniently forgotten.
Orton's second interaction was a couple of weeks ago on Raw when he invaded Laurinaitis' office with Daniel Bryan, Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio. This action resulted in the four-way championship match at Over The Limit.
Laurinaitis' decision was primarily seen as a move against Sheamus; however, the consequences also benefited Orton.
These instances of positive reaction towards Orton would be scant reason on their own; however, the situation becomes far more suspicious when compared with similar situations that have occurred against the other top WWE faces.
Sheamus was fined $500,000 for attacking a referee without previous significant interaction with Laurinaitis. Punk and Cena have both feuded with "Big Johnny." Big Show, Zack Ryder and Santino Marella have also felt his wrath. Randy Orton's exclusion from this list stands out like a sore thumb.
The final stumbling block is the "anyone who interferes with the Cena versus Laurinaitis match will be fired" stipulation. Truthfully, when has that ever been an issue for WWE storylines? There are so many ways around this issue that all the answers could not all be accounted for here. The stipulation is certainly not a good enough reason for this suggestion to not go ahead.
Such a shocking move would set up the summer. Laurinaitis would finally have a wrestler in his stable who can legitimately stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Cena and Punk, while Orton's fierce independence would make the alliance fragile and unpredictable. This situation might even take the WWE into new territory.
A New Title Will Be Introduced
2 of 5SmackDown gave the clearest indication yet that a unification match for the Intercontinental and United States Championships is on the cards. If this plays out, Over The Limit will see the announcement of a shocking matchup that will introduce a new third-tier belt akin to the old European title.
This decision would have a couple of positive effects on the WWE.
Firstly, whoever gets to run with the new title will get a huge push for the simple reason that the title is new. The likes of Damien Sandow or Antonio Cesaro would be the type of star to benefit most from this rub, as they could use this to propel themselves to higher profile feuds.
More importantly, the WWE will have the ability to build up levels of talent. The company can allow new wrestlers to chase the lower belt as a perfectly acceptable way for new talent to break into the business. The WWE will also get the chance to see if its new talent can connect with the audience, and creative will be able to ease off the monster pushes.
AJ Styles Will Interfere in the WWE Title Match
3 of 5There are very few wrestlers who are not former WWE stars who could interfere in a WWE championship match and make the situation better. AJ Styles is one of those men.
The promise of a three-way dual between "The Phenomenal One," CM Punk and Daniel Bryan would make pure wrestling fans dizzy with excitement.
Styles' acrobatic style would complement the striking of CM Punk and grappling of Daniel Bryan in a way that no other wrestler in the world could right now. This would be a perfect balance of complementary attributes that could take wrestling to new heights.
Of course, there are difficulties with this idea, such as the fact that Styles is under contract with TNA. However, Vince McMahon has bought out contracts before, so this needn’t interfere with a potentially great situation.
Beth Phoenix Will Put Layla Through A Table
4 of 5Calling a pay-per-view "Over The Limit" is always an excuse to set up a spot where the commentators can scream, "That is over the limit of human decency!" or something in that vein. This will have the most impact if performed by the much maligned WWE Divas.
The obvious approach would be to have Layla retain the title by roll-up or another opportunistic maneuver that will lead to the bigger and stronger Beth Phoenix snapping. Too often this results in referees or other Divas coming in for the save, so the shock value here would be in one diva, in this case Phoenix, going through with such a devastating move as putting her opponent through a table.
Hopefully this would be the instigation of the WWE giving women equality in the wrestling ring.
Rey Mysterio Will Align with A.W. to Mentor Epico and Primo
5 of 5The tag team title matchup featuring R-Truth and Kofi Kingston against Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger is the perfect time to introduce Rey Mysterio as Epico and Primo's mentor.
The set-up would see the former tag team champions Epico and Primo storm the ring to attack Truth and Kingston. As a result, Ziggler and Swagger would be disqualified, so Epico and Primo would find themselves outnumbered by two angry tag teams. This is the time to have Mysterio hit the ring alongside A.W. to help Primo and Epico clear the ring and establish their alliance.
Mysterio could then go on and be the mentor of Epico and Primo, as Mysterio, a small man himself, knows how to get to the top using the lucha libre style.
This role, similar to the one Ric Flair had in Evolution, should get the most out of the ailing Mysterio, who does not possess the durability to be a week in, week out performer in the WWE anymore.
Unfortunately, this is highly unlikely to happen. Mysterio is currently serving a 60-day ban after failing a wellness test. However, the WWE has been known to move the goalposts when a situation arises that could be beneficial for the company, so this unlikely scenario still makes this list of highly improbable predictions.
