Bayern Munich V. Chelsea Score: Less Heralded Teams Put on an Excellent Final
Bayern Munich and Chelsea may not be considered the premier clubs in the Champions League field, but the two clubs showed the world their best in the final. The match was filled with dramatic moments, fantastic goals and a ton of penalty drama.
The late goals turned into a penalty-kick shootout with more twists than a Stephen King novel. Didier Drogba chipped in the Champions League winner to cap the road victory for the Blues.
Both Chelsea and Bayern Munich were overshadowed this season by more highly-regarded clubs such as Premier League champion Manchester City and last year’s Champions League winner FC Barcelona.

The two clubs would not be denied their chance at hoisting the UCL cup, regardless of the challenger. Chelsea defeating favored Barcelona in the semifinals in arguably one of the biggest upsets this year. Ditto for Bayern upsetting Real Madrid for their championship berth.
Despite several suspensions that kept some of the team’s best on the sidelines, both teams were evenly matched throughout, providing a worthy championship match.
Bayern, up 3-1 on penalties at one point, needed only one more goal to clinch the title. Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer impressively served as a two-way player in penalty kicks, stopping Juan Mata’s PK and scoring on Petr Cech.
The buck stopped right there, though, for Bayern. They would miss two penalty kicks from there, and Chelsea would capitalize on three straight chances for a 4-3 penalty margin.
The match went scoreless for 82 minutes until Cech lost Thomas Muller on a corner kick and the midfielder headed in a score. Chelsea’s Drogba ensured some late drama, scoring the equalizer in the games waning moments.
Overtime wasn’t short of high tension, either. Early on, Bayern was awarded a penalty kick only four minutes into extra time, but Arjen Robben failed to end the match. At this point, the match turned into a war of attrition, which left viewers in a high anxiety until Drogba sent the winner into the net.
This UCL final may not have been the people's choice going in, but it certainly pleased viewers following its dramatic ending.
