WWE Over the Limit: Predicting 4 Title Matches and John Cena vs. Big Johnny

Kyle SchadlerJun 7, 2018

WWE presents Over the Limit, live on pay-per-view tonight!

With the summer beginning and WrestleMania feuds now over, this event features the champions up against some new challengers. The PPV has been built up pretty well with most of the hype coming from the battle of the Johns.

Scheduled for WWE’s annual May PPV are six matches, four of which are title matches and one on the preshow on YouTube.

Much like Extreme Rules, expect a random match or two to be added to the card during the show.

Here are the six current matches and who I think will come out on top!

Pre-Show: Zack Ryder vs. Kane

1 of 6

Zack Ryder and Kane have a small history from earlier this year. It wasn’t that they were involved in a feud; it was more like Ryder was Kane’s punching bag during the Big Red Monster’s feud with John Cena.

Throughout the feud, Kane would attack the Long Island Iced Z and send him to the hospital many times. Ryder has had a few chances to gain some revenge but he would always get squashed by the bigger Kane.

Now Ryder has the chance to do it again, this time on YouTube during the preshow of Over the Limit.

Will he be able to? I highly doubt it. As much as I like Ryder, his career seems to be going nowhere right now. That’s why I think Kane will be winning this.

I just hope their match lasts more than two minutes.

Winner: Kane

Layla vs. Beth Phoenix: Divas Championship

2 of 6

Beth Phoenix was well on her way to becoming the longest reigning Divas champion in the title’s history. Then 13 days before breaking the record, she was defeated in an upset by Nikki Bella.

The Glamazon was put on the injured list and Nikki went onto defend her newly won title at Extreme Rules against a mystery opponent. Layla returned that night after being on the shelf for a year and took the title away from the Bella twin.

The new Divas champion has since been on a winning streak, taking out Divas left and right.

With Phoenix being cleared to wrestle, she was granted her rematch at Over the Limit and took on Alicia Fox this past Monday on Raw. The former champion dismantled Alicia and proceeded to attack her post-match.

Layla made the save, which was the most interaction these two have had since their match was announced.

This match very well could be the best Divas match the WWE has seen in years. Beth is probably the best in the division and Layla has come a long way since being a Diva Search winner.

As long as they mesh well in the ring, and are given more than 30 seconds to a minute, this should be a very good match.

As for the winner, Layla just won the title and I just don’t see WWE taking it off of her so quickly. I think Beth Phoenix will be Divas champion again, but not until the feud is in its final stages.

Winner and Still Champion: Layla

Kofi Kingston and R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger: Tag Team Titles

3 of 6

Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger have been together for about a year now but weren’t always on the same page. It took them a few months, but Ziggler and Swagger soon started to get along.

They have had a few shots at the Tag Team Championship, but the team managed by Vickie Guerrero has always come up short.

Kofi Kingston and R-Truth were just thrown together one day as a team in February and would win the titles last month from Primo and Epico.

The feud between these two teams then began as they traded victories in one-on-one matches. This past Monday on Raw, the champions along with Brodus Clay defeated their challengers and The Miz, giving Kingston and Truth the momentum going into the PPV.

The tag-team division in WWE is always going up and down. Just when it seems like the division is back on track, something happens and it goes back downhill. Right now I’d say the division is in the middle; it’s not bad, but it’s not too good.

As for the winner, I think we’ll see new champions here. I’d like to think that WWE is trying to rebuild the division and giving it to a team who’s been together longer than any other currently in the spotlight would be a step in the right direction.

Winner and New Champions: Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger

Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio vs. Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton: World Title

4 of 6

Nobody was surprised when Sheamus won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVIII. What was surprising, though, was the fact that the match was a squash.

Sheamus has since proved that he deserved that title after a hell of a battle in a two-out-of-three-falls match against Daniel Bryan at Extreme Rules. With Sheamus now done with Bryan, the champion was looking at Alberto Del Rio as his next challenger.

Then last week everything changed when Chris Jericho pinned Sheamus in a tag-team match on Raw. Due to the events of the match, general manager John Laurinaitis made the match a fatal-four way including Jericho as well as Randy Orton into the mix.

On the following episode of SmackDown, Del Rio defeated Orton while Jericho beat Sheamus. Both matches ended in disqualification, which kept all four of them looking strong.

Well, all of them except for Del Rio. The aftermath of the main event saw Del Rio get hit with a Codebreaker, an RKO and the Brogue Kick.

This past Monday on Raw saw Jericho win by DQ once again, this time against Orton and a few days ago on SmackDown saw Sheamus defeat Orton clean. Post-match, the champion received an RKO, though.

I think that Randy Orton is going into this match with the momentum but I don’t see him winning the match. Alberto Del Rio has zero chance of winning this match, as he’s just dead in the water, and Jericho will come close.

This match will go to Sheamus, as I feel that it’s way too early to take the title off of him. I also don’t think WWE wants to turn the world title into a hot potato again like they did last year.

When Sheamus does lose it, I think it’ll be at SummerSlam.

Winner and Still Champion: Sheamus

CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan: WWE Championship

5 of 6

CM Punk and Daniel Bryan have a long history. They knew each other on the independent circuit and have wrestled on multiple occasions, including in Ring of Honor Wrestling.

Punk made it to the WWE first, making his debut in 2006. He has since won five world titles and has been WWE champion since November.

Bryan made his WWE debut in 2010 as a member of the first season of NXT. He made it to the main roster as part of the Nexus storyline in June but was released due to some controversy. He returned in August and would win the world title in December 2011.

These two wrestlers have crossed paths a few times while with WWE, including some matches while they were both champions, but the company never pulled the trigger on the feud until now.

They haven’t interacted too much since the match was made, but when they did, it was good.

Bryan has made multiple statements by applying the Yes Lock to Punk post-match and getting the champion attacked by Kane. He has also avoided Punk as much as possible in a tag-team match this past Monday on Raw.

The former world heavyweight champion has all the momentum in the world going into this match and that’s why I think he’s going to win.

Also factoring into my decision is A.J. She approached Punk backstage on Raw wishing him luck and inserting herself into the storyline. She’s still in love with Daniel Bryan and I can see her costing Punk the match to try to get him back.

Bryan will win here and the feud these two will have will be the highlight of the summer.

Winner and New Champion: Daniel Bryan

John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis

6 of 6

The night after WrestleMania XXVIII saw the return of Brock Lesnar. Much like the Rock, Lesnar set his sights on John Cena. He delivered an F-5 to the face of the WWE and the following week the match was set for Extreme Rules.

General manager John Laurinaitis revealed that he signed Lesnar to be the new face of the company and to bring legitimacy back to the WWE. His real plan, though, was to take out Cena.

While Lesnar beat the hell out of him at Extreme Rules, Cena was standing tall at the event as the winner. On Raw, Lesnar attacked Triple H and a furious Big Johnny attacked Cena knowing that Lesnar wouldn’t be able to continue the job.

Laurinaitis declared that he was Cena’s Over the Limit opponent, and the match was made.

This feud has been all talk, though understandably so. As Johnny Ace would brag about his time in Japan, he would also insult the WWE Universe. His actions did not go unnoticed, though.

This past Monday on Raw, John Cena revealed in a letter from the board of directors that their match would be one-on-one with no interference. If someone did interfere, they would be fired. The final stipulation stated that if Big Johnny lost to Cena, then he would be fired as well.

The stipulation adds a lot of intrigue to the match. Does John Cena simply beat the hell out of John Laurinaitis and get him fired? I don’t think it’ll be that easy.

Big Johnny has developed a great character over the past few months and taking him off of television now would be a mistake. The WWE Universe needs someone to despise and that someone is Johnny Ace.

That’s why I think Laurinaitis will win this match.

How will he win it? I can see someone interfering on his behalf. It won’t be anyone on the roster; it’ll be a new or returning star, or possibly even Lesnar.

My money’s on the Big Show, though. Before being fired by the general manager on Raw, Big Show declared that he’d do anything to keep his job.

Would that anything include costing Cena the match? I believe it will be.

Winner: John Laurinaitis
