London 2012: Latest News on Biggest Olympic Stars
With the 2012 Summer Olympics 70 days away, USA stars Michael Phelps and Allyson Felix are gearing up for gold-medal runs.
In 2008, Phelps broke Mark Spitz's Olympic record, capturing eight gold medals in all. We can all remember where we were when Phelps made his incredible comeback.
Although Felix got a silver medal in 2008, she responded with a gold in the 4x400-meter relay. This will be Felix's third Olympics, after also coming in second in 2004.
Here is the latest news on whats happening with some of your favorite Olympic athletes.
John Isner
Tennis champion John Isner is excited about playing on the grass courts of Wimbledon twice this year. After The Championships Wimbledon, the world's top players return for the Olympics. Isner feels that playing for Team USA would be a great opportunity (via Kathleen Nelson of the St. Louis Post Dispatch):
"It's such a huge event. The tennis season revolves around the four grand slams but with this an Olympic year, there are five grand slams. And two are at Wimbledon...Wimbledon is the mecca of tennis, but again the Olympics are just once very four years. I just hope I get the chance to compete.
"
Isner is hot coming off a wins against Roger Federer in the Davis Cup and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the BNP Paribas Open. Isner is now ranked No. 10 in the world and poised for good performances before the Olympics.
Michael Phelps
Since his 2008 record-breaking performance, Michael Phelps has looked human. Most recently, he came in second in the 200-meter butterfly. According to Associated Press (via SI.com), Phelps sees this latest race as just a tune-up for the Olympics:
"I know this is not the Olympic trials, this is not the Olympic Games...It's a stepping stone heading in right direction for the end result. You've heard me say that so many times, but that's the truth. These are little things along the way. I like to call them quizzes - to really see what I need to improve on.
"
This summer Phelps will square off against teammate Ryan Lochte. The rivalry is already producing hype, with many considering them the two best swimmers in the world. If 2012 is anything like 2008, then fans should keep their eyes on Phelps and Lochte.
The biggest news coming out of Felix's camp is that she may be running another event. Although she is known for the 200-meter, there as been indication that she may race the 100-meter. At the U.S. Olympic Committee media summit, Felix said she is considering running the event, according to Associated Press (via ESPN.com):
"It's definitely one of my possibilities...Since my last race, people actually believe me. I'll run the 200 for sure and then I'll see ... whether I'll run the 100 or the 400.
"
Felix has time to think it over before the Olympic Trials, which start in Eugene on June 18. Earlier in the year, she indicated she might run the 400.
Even if she decides to forgo either race, Felix will still be a star to watch in London.
