WWE Rumors: Chris Jericho Doesn't Need to Capture Gold to Gain Success

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Who are the folks at WWE.com trying to fool by implying that Chris Jericho needs to win the title at Over the Limit?

Alex Giannini of WWE.com wrote:

"

When Chris Jericho returned to WWE in January, he did so with much fanfare and a pointed, tantalizing promise: His enigmatic arrival would herald "the end of the world." Now, more than five months later, Jericho may be facing his final days in a WWE ring if he fails to capitalize on his fourth title opportunity in as many pay-per-view events at WWE Over the Limit this Sunday.

Really?

Since when does a superstar need to capture gold to be considered great in this era of professional wrestling? Not as long as reigning WWE champion CM Punk continues to take a back seat to larger story lines at every pay-per-view.

It means nothing that Jericho has lost three straight shots at the gold. If the WWE can involve him with a major star—especially one of its part-time mega stars—he's good to go. It shouldn't be this way, but it is, the titles don't mean as much as they used to.

I realize I am in the minority in wanting the title to matter like it once did, but the fact is that it doesn't. The ridiculous main event planned for Over the Limit should be proof enough.

Jericho's comeback has been an enormous success by today's standards.

He was one of the standouts in the Royal Rumble, he competed in an entertaining match at the Elimination Chamber, had another decent showing at WrestleMania, a Chicago Street-Fight at Extreme Rules and cut some risqué promos about CM Punk's family.

In a world where titles are secondary, that sounds like a solid five months of work to me.

Applying pressure to Jericho because of failed title attempts is crazy. He basically walked off the street into near top-billing, and winning the title in any of these attempts obviously wouldn't vault him any higher on the food chain than he is right now.

Neither Sheamus, Daniel Bryan nor CM Punk have headlined any of the last three pay-per-views, and they represent the title holders over that time span.

In this era of the WWE, Jericho is doing just fine.
