Shinji Kagawa: Bidding War Between EPL Powers Will Drive Up Young Star's Price

Tim DanielsJun 5, 2018

Shinji Kagawa has quickly become a popular transfer target after the Borussia Dortmund midfielder made it clear he'd prefer a Premier League move. The high level of interest will cause a bidding war between the top clubs, causing the fee to skyrocket.

The Associated Press reports Kagawa met with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson this week as the Red Devils look to upgrade their midfield. United rival and league champion Manchester City is also said to have interest along with perennial contenders Arsenal and Chelsea.

Kagawa has enjoyed a breakout season for Borussia Dortmund, scoring 17 goals and adding 13 assists in 43 games across all competitions. That type of production from a 23-year-old player will always draw interest from elite clubs.

The rising star has been rated at £7 million, according to the Daily Express. Even though that's a reasonable price to pay considering his potential, it's likely to rise if so many teams continue to show interest in him.

Since Kagawa hasn't singled out a team he'd like to play for yet, it helps Borussia Dortmund use the teams as leverage against each other to get a better deal.

The best-case scenario for Kagawa's club is if United and City start battling each other. After a title race that went down to the final moments of the season, both squads are looking for a leg up heading into the next campaign.

Not only would one team add a really good player to its roster, but also it would gain a mental edge as well by having beaten out a fierce rival for a future star.

Ultimately, Kagawa should have success wherever he lands. He brings good pace to the table, which will make his transition easier, and there's no reason he can't continue to improve once he gets settled into his new role.

His ability to play in any system should also ensure multiple teams stay in the race to sign him, at least for awhile. It also wouldn't he a surprise to see more teams beyond the four already mentioned get involved before a deal is made.

As the price rises, so will the risk. Making a big investment in a player with just one big season under his belt could backfire. It would also put more pressure on Kagawa to perform. But the risks are outweighed by the potential rewards.

While it's still too early to know where he's going to land, it's safe to assume the race to land his signature will be intense and should make for an interesting summer.
