BYU Football: Previewing the Cougars' Receivers
BYU returns the explosive duo of Hoffman and Apo at the receiver position this season, and the team is expected to have plenty of success.
But how much? With Riley Nelson returning at quarterback, each receiver could have a great season. Here is an overview of the Cougars' top three wide receivers for the upcoming year, and an in-depth look at each player.
Cody Hoffman
1 of 3Cody Hoffman led BYU's receivers in all categories last year with 61 catches, 943 yards and 10 touchdowns, while returning 36 kickoffs for 879 yards. He also returned the first kickoff for a touchdown in BYU history since 1998.
Along with impressive stats, he was nominated to the Yahoo! Sports All-Independent Team, Phil Steele All-Independent First Team and FBS All-Independent Team last season.
Standing at 6'4", Hoffman has shown that he can make highlight-worthy catches, and he may have an incredible season.
Ross Apo
2 of 3Ross Apo was the FBS Independent Freshman of the Year last season, and was a member of the Phil Steele All-Independent Second Team. Seeing action in all 13 games, he caught 34 passes for 453 yards and nine touchdowns.
Statistically, Apo was a much more efficient player the first half of the season then the second half. This may have just been because of the quarterback change, but even if so, the Cougars need Apo to come back to his normal, impressive self.
JD Falslev
3 of 3JD Falslev, a former walk-on, played in all 13 of the Cougars' games last season. A fan-favorite, Falslev is not only a receiver but the team's punt returner. He finished the season with 330 yards on 31 receptions (10.6 yards per catch).
As a punt returner, Falslev compiled 220 yards and a touchdown on the season. Despite his size (5'8" and 184 pounds), he will most likely make a big difference on the season, whether on offense or special teams.
