Bayern Munich vs Chelsea: Bold Predictions for Champions League Final

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

If the sheer shock of just seeing Bayern Munich and Chelsea in the Champions League final is any indication, the actual game itself won't go like people expect it will.

No one expected Bayern to slip past Real Madrid, the champions of La Liga, in the semifinals. Similarly, even less people thought Chelsea, who disappointed this year in the EPL, would knock off arguably the best club in the world, Barcelona.

I'm guessing no one thought Manchester United would exit as early as they did, either, or that Man City, the EPL winners, would fail to make it out of group play.

It's been a weird Champions League season, and it's about to get even more weird. Here's a look at what unexpected events you can, um, expect to see on Saturday.

Mario Gomez: Hat Trick

I told you we were going to get crazy. For a little bit of reference, there hasn't been a hat trick in a Champions League final since 1969 when it was then the European Cup and Pierino Prati netted three for Milan in a 4-1 win over Ajax.

A few players have scored two, but never three since then. Mario Gomez is about to buck that trend.

On the attack, Bayern is brilliant, aggressive, and relentless. Against Chelsea, who will be without suspended defenders John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic, and will be led in the back by a less-than-100-percent David Luiz, FCB will be have plenty of scoring opportunities.

Most of those chances will go to striker Mario Gomez, who has netted 48 total goals this year across all competition, with 12 of those coming in the Champions League.

Gomez will get plenty of chances, and should capitalizes on those chances.

Fernando Torres will score

Everyone knows about Torres' notorious struggles since joining Chelsea; but hey, he scored in the final seconds against Barcelona.

Sure, it was one of the easier goals of his career, but it's something.

Torres will likely come on as a late substitute in this one to provide pace. Also, don't forget that Bayern's depth in the back is depleted due to suspensions.

Torres will have a few opportunities as legs start getting tired near the end, especially if things are close. More space will open up as teams go for late goals.

Opportunities don't always mean goals for this enigma of a player, but I'm going against the odds with this one.

Bayern wins 4-3 in extra time

It's not a normal score for a Champions League final, but I just think the absence of Terry, Ivanovic, Luiz Gustavo, Holger Badstuber and David Alaba is going to make a big difference.

We know Bayern has plenty of weapons on the other side– Didier Drogba, Juan Mata, and Frank Lampard have been playing very well in the UCL for Chelsea.

Both of these teams can score, and both defenses are less than 100 percent. If Chelsea doesn't sit back and park the bus, we will see a lot of goals.
