Kenny Dalglish: Liverpool Makes Right Call to Fire Manager After Poor Season

Tim DanielsMay 16, 2012

Kenny Dalglish has been relieved of his duties as manager of Liverpool after finishing eighth in the Premier League this season, according to the team website. A lack of results under Dalglish forced the storied club to make a tough, but correct decision.

The Reds' ownership group gave Dalglish and his staff more freedom to bring in transfers to help boost the team's chances of contending for a Champions League spot and ultimately the league title. The lack of production from those players, most notably Andy Carroll, put Dalglish on the hot seat.

Even though Dalglish was able to end Liverpool's trophy drought by capturing the Carling Cup earlier in the season, expectations were much higher than that heading into the season and the Reds weren't able to live up to them.

His second run with the club—he previously managed Liverpool from 1985 to 1991—wasn't nearly as successful as his first. Once the initial excitement of his return died down and the focus turned to results, Dalglish wasn't able to retain support.

The swift decision shows Liverpool management is serious about getting into the title chase sooner rather than later. The talent gap continues to be an issue, but perhaps a new manager will help raise the play of the current stars enough to generate interest from more high-profile transfers moving forward.

All told, a change was necessary for the Reds to start getting back on track. Dalglish was given a fair chance to build a roster his way and it just didn't work out. When that happens, it's always better to cut ties quickly rather than letting things drag out and become a distraction.

The Liverpool job should still generate a lot of interest. Despite the poor campaign, it's still an elite job that most managers would be lucky to have. The owners just have to find the right person to turn things around and start moving forward once again.

It's a task Dalglish couldn't handle, and that's why the team made the right call to let him go.
