Robert Lewandowski: Dynamic Scorer Won't Leave Borussia Dortmund This Summer

Wes ODonnellMay 16, 2012

When powerhouses such as Manchester United and Bayern Munich come knocking, they're awfully hard to ignore. The English and German giants have a tendency to get their way in the transfer window by offering copious amounts of competition for players and massive sums of money for clubs.

When these two Champions League regulars want someone, they typically get him.

Both clubs, according to Goal.com, are rumored to be interested in Borussia Dortmund star Robert Lewandowski, the reigning Bundesliga player of the year, this summer.

But the Goal.com report also quotes Lewandoski's agent saying:

"

We acknowledge the interest of Manchester United in Lewandowski. I cannot confirm discussions about the financial terms.

We respect the decision of BVB not to sell Robert.

"

This information comes one day after his agent, Maik Barthel, acknowledged that Dormund's extension offer was insufficient.

The Polish national is under contract through 2014, but also had this to say about his situation (via Goal.com):

"

"Yes, of course I've heard [about Bayern's interest]," Lewandowski told Sport-Bild. "I do not know what will happen in two months. I've also thought, 'What more can I accomplish with Dortmund?' Difficult."

"

Dortmund would have to be insane to sell their best player to one of their biggest league rivals—Bayern Munich isn't just another league rival, to boot.

This situation will likely play out as such: BVB will decline any offers for their star this summer, and he'll play with the German side for the 2012-2013 campaign. But with only one year remaining on his deal, clubs from across Europe will come in heavy next summer and pry him away from the Westfalenstadion then.

The only way Dortmund avoid losing him in the next two years is another league title, possibly another domestic double, some Champions League success and an increased extension. Even then, it is a long shot for them to hold on to the 23-year-old budding superstar.

Don't be surprised if he sticks around for one more year, but don't expect more than that.
