WWE Over The Limit 2012: Daniel Bryan and Stars Who Desperately Need To Win

Adam WellsMay 16, 2012

One of the great myths in professional wrestling is that wins and losses don't matter. WWE understands that, which is why John Cena never loses to anyone, even when the story is set up for him to do so.

Being a great in-ring worker should be good enough to get you a job in WWE, but there has to be some level of commitment to the character from the company to really see a performer's popularity explode.

At WWE Over The Limit this Sunday, there are a number of big-time players in the business who desperately need a win to kick-start their careers. We can talk all we want about great matches, but fans need to see that the company wants someone to be a star in order to treat them like one.

Daniel Bryan (vs. CM Punk for the WWE Championship)

WWE got a ton of heat for treating Daniel Bryan—and Sheamus, for that matter—like garbage at WrestleMania. As a sort of make good for its colossal mistake, Bryan has been put in title matches on the two pay-per-views since that fateful day in April.

While it is great to see Bryan wrestling for the WWE championship, especially since it is against one of his best rivals in Ring of Honor, it doesn't mean much if he isn't winning the matches.

If Bryan keeps wrestling in these matches without winning, he is eventually going to turn into Dolph Ziggler: an insanely gifted professional wrestler who no one takes seriously because he never goes over in matches that matter.

Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger (vs. Kofi and R-Truth for the Tag Team Championship)

Speaking of Dolph Ziggler, it is time to get this poor guy a victory on pay-per-view. WWE doesn't have to worry about him going over one of the Golden Children in the company on this show, so why not give him a match where he can show the world how good he is in the ring AND let him win?

Ziggler appeared to be destined for big things at the end of 2011, but things quickly fell apart, starting with his burial against CM Punk at the Royal Rumble. It hasn't gotten any better in the four months since. In fact, his stock keeps dropping, thanks to losses against people like Brodus Clay.

Swagger never wins, which has all but killed any chance he has to become a star in WWE. That is a shame, because he has a lot of talent as a wrestler but rarely gets to show it.

Since Vince McMahon hates the tag team division, there is no reason for him to care who wins this match. Hopefully, he puts the more talented team over.

Chris Jericho (vs. Sheamus, Randy Orton, Alberto Del Rio for World Heavyweight Championship)

Before we get into this match, I should state up front that I don't expect Jericho to win. He has a lot going on with his band and is going to start touring soon, so putting the title on him now seems like a long shot.

That said, Jericho has yet to win on pay-per-view since returning in July. He has been wrestling in high-profile matches on all these shows, but he isn't going over at all.

Jericho's return was supposed to ignite a spark in the rest of the product, but instead, he has turned into a guy getting put in a lot of main events because of his name and not anything he has done to warrant it.
