Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea: Bayern Must Continue to Keep Emotions in Check to Win

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

Bayern needed to keep their emotions in check throughout the duration of the Champions League in order to maintain their hopes of playing the final in their own backyard, and when do-or-die time arrives on Saturday, they'll have to do it again.

Bayern will face Chelsea this weekend in Munich, becoming the first team since 1984 to play in the final the same year it's hosting.

Playing in their own territory—in front of their own fans, in their own comfortable surroundings—is doubtlessly an advantage for Bayern, but as the match creeps closer, the pressure will mount. Now, the challenge will be triumphing despite all of the hype and excitement surrounding playing the biggest game of the year right at home.

Arjen Robben is trying not to let the excitement get the best of him as he chases his first title, though he recognizes what a special situation faces his club. He told UEFA.com

"

I think it's also great for the people inside the club who have been here for such a long time and who have seen the club develop and become what it is today. This is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, with a great history, and it always has been. To reach the final and to play in your own stadium is something really amazing and a dream come true for many people inside the club.

"

Bayern, however, will have their hands full against Chelsea, especially considering the potential return of Gary Cahill and David Luiz, who are mounting comebacks from hamstring injuries. Both are eager to return for the biggest game of their lives, particularly Cahill, who sustained the injury last month at Barcelona but has been hoping for a pre-final return ever since.

He told FIFA.com, "I'm just happy that it's healed quickly. We've worked really hard, all day, afternoons, and I'm fortunate enough to be back. Hopefully, I'll be fit—I will be fit, and hopefully I'll be out there if selected."

But Bayern isn't going to let anything ruin their unique homecoming. The only obstacle will be channeling their emotions toward a spectacular performance instead of letting the excitement defeat them.

The only thing worse than losing before getting a chance to play in the final on their home turf would be losing at home when it matters most.
