7 Annoying Fantasy Football Players in Almost Every League

Marco PatitucciJun 3, 2018

Fantasy football is supposed to be fun, but there's usually at least a few people in your league who make you cringe/cry/swear.

1. Never Checks or Changes Their Roster

After Week 5, this fantasy owner may be starting one player on IR, one who has a bye week, one who is doubtful and one who lost his starting gig in Week 3. Unfortunately, you played this owner in Week 2 and they scraped out a two-point victory. Now they’re a gimme-win for everyone else—yeesh.

2. Repeatedly Offers Ridiculous Trades

Yes, I may have mentioned how much I love it when LeGarrette Blount hurdles a defender, but that doesn’t mean I’m trading Ray Rice or (next offer) Frank Gore for him.

Also, I get the same updates you get, so those trade offers with recently injured players are just offensive.

And at this point, I think most fantasy owners are wary of two-for-one trades where another owner is offering two good players for one great one. Unless your team is absolutely decimated by injuries, it’s usually a bad idea to trade away a superstar for depth. Thanks for filling my inbox, though.

3. Changes Their Team Name Every Week

Okay, we get it; you like to have fun with your team name—but EVERY WEEK? This owner will change their team name after the draft, when they pick up a new player, or as a bit of word play off of their opponent for that week.

This owner probably loves puns way too much and may stream through names such as Rice-O-Ronnie, Manningham Sandwich, Vick of Time and Tebow & Arrow.

Yes, puns in fantasy team names are a longstanding tradition—but really, one is enough. Leaving the other owners in the league wondering what’s happening in the standings or not knowing who they’re facing is an annoying byproduct as well.

By the way, if I end up with Arian Foster this year I’m going with the team name “Foster the Peephole”—It works on a few different levels.

4. Hasn’t Changed Team Name in 10 Years

It can be the fantasy football equivalent of a hanging-chad joke. Their team name may be as tried and true as Favre’s Wranglers, but if it mentions Favre at all then they should follow the Packers’ lead from 2008—it’s time for a change.

As a potential solution, here's one new team name specific to this year which is courtesy of Osi Umenyiora “Happy Mother’s Day LeSean!” is a gem for Giants fans, especially. Twitter can be a great place of inspiration for other team names as well.

5. Knows Nothing About Football but Beats You

If you play in a league with friends and family, usually there’s a player that doesn’t know much about football.

Maybe they follow the home team and can name the star players, but they’d have serious trouble describing a West Coast Offense, Cover 2 defense or the difference between a 3-4 and a 4-3.

Yet, somehow, they beat you every year. This owner seems to have all the luck: no injuries on their roster, breakout performances from late-round picks and timely performances from their kicker and defense.

Sometimes, a winner can be more annoying than a whiner.

6. Complains About League Settings

Complaining about league settings, especially after the draft, is just plain annoying. It's the owner's responsibility to check the league settings beforehand; there are plenty of different types of leagues to fit your preference.

Comments from this type of owner may include “Passing TDs should be six points” when, of course, they drafted two QBs in the first five rounds or "Return yards should count" when they are the owner of Darren Sproles and Ted Ginn.

7. Talks Too Much Smack

A little back-and-forth banter can make a league more competitive and entertaining, but sometimes there's one owner who takes it too far. When smack talk strays from fantasy-related to personal, a league can get awkward fast.
