Carson Palmer Says Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders Both Won Trade

Jun 7, 2018

The Cincinnati Bengals traded quarterback Carson Palmer to the Oakland Raiders in what was widely hailed as a trade that the Bengals won, Palmer disagrees.

Palmer was a guest on the Dan Patrick Show and was asked about the trade and had this to say:

"

"It was time to move on and it was time for them to move on," Palmer said Monday on the Dan Patrick Show, "and they're in a better place and I'm definitely in a better place."

Palmer added, "I think in the years to come both organizations will look back and say this thing was the best thing to happen."

To review, the Bengals traded the disgruntled quarterback to the Raiders in exchange for a 2012 first round pick and a second round pick in 2013 that becomes a first round selection if the Raiders reach the AFC Championship.

The Bengals used the pick to select Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Palmer joined the Raiders in week seven and led the Raiders to a 4-5 record as the starter to finish out the season. He threw for 2,753 yards, 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Palmer could be right. Both parties should be happy with the results of the trade. Palmer got his wish and was allowed to continue to play NFL football while the Bengals picked up extra picks to continue building for the future.

However, Palmer could be wrong in terms of value. He’ll be 33 years old soon and there are massive expectations surrounding him after the Raiders’ organization gave up two highly valued draft selections to acquire him.

While the Bengals are content with their young team led by Palmer’s replacement, Andy Dalton, the Raiders organization and their fanbase won’t be satisfied if Palmer doesn’t win at least one playoff game. That’s something Palmer couldn’t do with Cincinnati in seven years as a starter.

It’s also interesting to note that the head coach that brought Palmer to Oakland was Hue Jackson. He spent three seasons under Bengals’ head coach Marvin Lewis as a wide receivers coach.

After bringing Palmer in via trade and finishing up a disappointing season, Jackson was fired. He promptly rejoined the Bengals coaching staff as an offensive assistant.

Palmer’s comments can likely be chalked up to a typical professional athlete response. What else did anyone expect him to say?

Regardless of what Palmer thinks, only time will tell if this was a great decision for both organizations.

Who do you think won the Carson Palmer trade?
