UFC on Fuel Results: What We Learned from Marcus LeVesseur vs. Cody McKenzie
Former Ultimate Fighter Cody McKenzie was slated to face veteran Aaron Riley, but Riley was forced out and replaced by Marcus LeVesseur. LeVesseur entered the fight with an extensive background in amateur wrestling.
Here's what we learned from the bout.
What we'll remember about this fight:
Despite LeVesseur manhandling McKenzie for the first three minutes of the bout, McKenzie still found his go-to move, the guillotine choke. LeVesseur was forced to tap, just like 10 others before him.
What we learned about LeVesseur:
His wrestling is for real. Many felt that his lack of Division I competition meant his amateur record didn't mean as much. He blasted McKenzie with a takedown as soon as the fight began.
What we learned about McKenzie:
He's resilient. McKenzie was getting dominated on the feet and in the wrestling department, but once he got his guard, he patiently found the guillotine and forced LeVesseur to tap.
What's next for LeVesseur:
Since he took the fight on short notice, the loss won't hurt him much. A fight with another former collegiate wrestler such as John Cholish would make for an interesting bout.
What's next for McKenzie:
McKenzie did little to dispatch the notion that he's a one-trick pony. But if his opponents can't stop it, it's hard to fault him for it. Rescheduling his previous matchup with Riley is one option. Another possible opponent could be Reza Madadi.
