UFC on Fuel Results: What We Learned from Jeff Curran vs. Johnny Eduardo
Experienced bantamweights Jeff Curran and Johnny Eduardo were matched up on the night's undercard. Curran brought with him a resume of nearly 50 fights, including bouts in the WEC, Strikeforce and the IFL. The Brazilian Eduardo entered the cage with over 30 fights of his own.
Both fighters favor the submission game, with 32 combined finishes between them. Here's what we learned from the bout.
What We'll Remember about This Fight
Johnny Eduardo's leg kicks battered Curran's lead leg for the first two rounds. Curran showcased a lot of heart by surviving the onslaught, but mounted little offense until the final frame.
What We Learned about Curran
He needs to work on checking leg kicks. Not until he was desperate in the final round did he find any sort of rhythm. Even with as much experience as he has, he looked content to take a beating for the first 10 minutes of the bout.
What We Learned about Eduardo
His striking is something to reckon with in the 135-pound division. In a matchup between ground specialists, Eduardo's heavy leg kicks were the difference. Like fellow Nova Uniao products Jose Aldo and Renan Barao, Eduardo can mix it up on his feet or on the ground.
What's Next for Curran?
Curran may not get another crack with the promotion. His strong third round may have saved his job, but it's clear that the veteran is not a contender. A fight with one of the recent Ultimate Fighter season 14 cast members may be the type of fight to allow him to rebound.
What's Next for Eduardo?
Following his first Octagon win, the Brazilian will need to try to string together consecutive wins. A fight with another UFC on Fuel winner, Francisco Rivera, would produce fireworks.
