Premier League Survival Sunday Fallout: What the Managers Had to Say
Survival Sunday is over. Now let's listen to what the managers said.
Manchester City won the title by beating QPR 3-2 with a breathtaking rally in stoppage time. As you might expect, manager Roberto Mancini had plenty of positive things to say.
Manchester United barely missed out on their 20th title. As you might expect, Sir Alex Ferguson was a little bitter.
That's not all, though. Over the next few slides, there's reaction from all the most important matches on what was an unbelievable final day of the English Premier League season.
Mancini: Incredible
1 of 8Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini reflected on an "incredible" finish to his club's title-winning season.
From The Daily Telegraph:
""It was incredible - they deserved this. To win it like this is incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a finale like this.
"We didn't deserve to lose, we had a lot of chances and we deserved to win the game and championship.
"It's fantastic for the club and the supporters after 44 years. It's been a crazy season and a crazy last minute."
"
Mancini also admitted he thought City's title push was over when they went into stoppage time trailing QPR 2-1.
""Five minutes from the end, I didn't think we'd win this game. But we deserved to win this and deserved to win the title. We were on top for 20 games.
"I think for us it was really important to start winning this championship, Manchester City can have a big future now."
"
Mancini: Fans Deserve Credit
2 of 8Mancini also praised City's long-suffering fans, who had waited 44 years since the club's last league title.
From Manchester City's official website:
"“Every week the ground is full and the noise for the team is huge. I have said many times this season that no one should underestimate the help that players get from having a crowd supporting them in this way. It drives us on when things are possible not going so well.
“I am so proud of the players too. They fought hard all season and now can see the rewards. Hopefully this will be just the start of days like this. We set out to make history and that is what we have done.”
"
Ferguson: 100 Years
3 of 8Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson congratulated City on their title triumph but also took a dig at his crosstown rivals.
According to Ferguson, it would take City 100 years to match United's accomplishments.
From The Guardian:
""It's a cruel way to lose out but I have experienced many ups and downs in 26 years. I think we have a rich history, better than anyone and it will take them [City] a century to get to our level of history. For us it's still a challenge; we're good at challenges and we'll kick on from here."
"
Hughes: Never Again
4 of 8Queens Park Rangers lost to Manchester City in dramatic fashion but remained in the Premier League thanks to Stoke's 2-2 draw with Bolton.
QPR boss Mark Hughes told the club's official website that he was "immensely proud" of the result and pledged that the club would not face such a situation again while he is manager.
""We've pulled it off. If we'd have held on for a win it would have been the greatest result in Premier League history."
Hughes concluded: "As long as I'm in charge at this Football Club, we will never be in a position like we were today again.
"We have a great Board and CEO who have been brilliant since I walked in the door.
"The future at this Club is very bright and we all can't wait to be part of it."
"
Coyle: We Did Enough
5 of 8Bolton manager Owen Coyle expressed disappointment at the club's relegation, saying Wanderers "did enough" to beat Stoke on the final day of the season.
Here's what he told the club's official website:
""There's obviously huge disappointment for everybody involved with the football club, especially the fans who were tremendous today.
"
"We've had superb support throughout the season, home and away, and once again we had a tremendous backing as the fans supported us in their numbers.
"Today, I felt that we did enough to win the game after the slow start we made."
Wenger: I Can Sleep Better at Night Now
6 of 8Arsenal clinched Champions League qualification for the 15th straight season after defeating West Brom 3-2 away.
The Gunners finished third, and manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal.com that he "can sleep better at night" now.
""It is good to sleep better at night,” the Frenchman told Arsenal Player. “It is a tricky position in fourth because you don't want Chelsea to win the Champions League.
"
"And to be fourth is playing a qualifier, which every year is more difficult. Therefore just to be in the group stage straight away is fantastic.
“It is true that we had problems getting over the line but we were not the only ones. The players have given a lot, I must say."
Redknapp: Fantastic Season
7 of 8Tottenham Hotspur finished fourth and clinched a spot in next season's Champions League qualifiers.
But Spurs must hope Chelsea lose to Bayern Munich in this weekend's Champions League final. A victory for the Blues would put Chelsea in next season's Champions League instead of Tottenham.
Nonetheless, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp hailed his team's "fantastic season."
Here's what he told the club's official website:
"“It’s been a fantastic season,” said Harry.
“To finish fourth in a Champions League place, we can’t ask for more than that. To finish above Liverpool and Chelsea, to be right up there, one point behind Arsenal in the end, it’s been a fantastic achievement.
“We played some amazing football this season and to finish in the top four is great for us.
“Tottenham have only finished in the top four twice since the Premier League started and I’ve been lucky enough to be manager both times. I’m very proud of that.”
"
Pardew: One of Finest Seasons
8 of 8Newcastle missed out on Champions League qualification after their final-day loss to Everton. But Magpies boss Alan Pardew called his squad's fifth-place finish "one of the finest seasons at this club."
From The Independent:
""We have made a huge leap this year.
"Even just to compete with these top teams, and to finish above the great teams that we have, the players can be very proud.
"It is one of the finest seasons at this club."
